There has been a blue tit here for 8-9 months with a beak that appears to be growing.  Thought it was a twig initially.  He/she gets a meal worm, traps it in the claws and bites pieces off; cleans the beak then bites another piece.  Not a scruffy bird so obviously healthy and managing to keep feathers clean.

My bird bath froze, so I emptied it and put some clean water in (without the rocks because they are frozen to the last lot of water which is still frozen on my back lawn)  I expect I will have to repeat this for the next two mornings.

Birds don't stand a chance this morning - their bath has a nice thick layer of snow over it.  :(

I do wish that the 'ball on the pond will stop it freezing' idea would die a death.  IT DOES NOT WORK!   I have had ponds for over 28 years.  I have had balls of various sizes frozen into the water  :o because there isn't enough of the ball below the surface.

So there ...........  ;D

Fed the birds earlier.  All busy.  Blackbirds fighting.  We have a thrush  8).   Warm water into clean drinking pans.

I read somewhere on the internet that pigeons like cooked rice. Since they have eaten all the robin food, I thought I would give them some rice going spare in the fridge.  The have turned their beaks up at it  >:(

We had what I thought was a big fat thrush - it was a fieldfare  :)

We have had Fieldfare's as well.  Apparently the come into garden, parks etc, in very cold weather to find berries.  It has been wonderful, the last few days, watching them.

I agree, I spent hours each week watching the birds from my kitchen sink: 7 redwings and fieldfares here earlier; 5 male blackbirds; 1 thrush; 3 robins; blue tits, great tits, siskin, chaffinches - poor things  :-\

Snow mostly gone.  Siskins R making a mess under the feeders, redwings and fieldfares gone ....... sun is shining, crocii are open and other Spring flowers seem to have survived  ::)

Our two doves which have been around 4/5 years have been pair bonding  ;).  Blue tits and chaffinches are chasing round the garden using up energy! A few sparrows and a brambling here this morning  :)

Lovely to hear the sound of song thrushes until well after 7 pm when it was almost dark tonight. I was listening to three of them in different parts of the village and fields from our back garden and couldn't believe how late they were singing. Could just make out one of them at the top of a tree nearby singing its little heart out :)
