So sorry to hear about your VA flare, how rotten for you  :'(.

I can't really answer your question, but a good place to ask about this type of thing is on Jane Lewis's vaginal atrophy facebook group, where there is a wealth of knowledge and advice on all things vulval. (I'm not dissing MM members here as someone may well have the answer!) Jane Lewis is Maryjane on here and might see your post. It might be a good idea to tell us why you are using the Dermovate.

All the best,

JP xx

I'm prescribed Dermavate by my vulva specialist  when i have a flare up and use Ovestine every night also. I usually use the Dermavate a couple of hours before applying the Ovestin.

Hi Dierdre

I have similar symptoms and I don't mix them on the outside.   When I get a flare I initially use Dermavate ointment externally morning and evening, with a layer of Diprobase ointment over the top to ‘seal' it in - sticky but worth it.  I was told to apply a max of two 3/4 finger lengths of Dermovate to the entire area and rub in gently.  You could use either Ovestin or vagifem internally as long as you place high at night.   If you are really in pain, then Elma cream applied externally thinly can help - numbs the area.  A bit warm when you first put it on but then 4-6 hours of relief - a small amount (pea sized) goes a very long way  Just to say I think it's good to use the ointments rather than creams, they ‘stick' better and so absorb more. https://www.superdrug.com/Emla/Emla-Cream-5g-with-x2-Dressing/p/567664.

I have also had great success with Emuaid, it's expensive but works and lasts a long time https://www.amazon.co.uk/EmuaidMAX®-Ointment-0-5oz-Multi-Purpose/dp/B07Q36184L/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=Emuaid&qid=1575442286&sr=8-4

The key is to get it and kept under control - easier said than done!

Hope you feel better soon

I have symtoms of Lichens which is why i have the dermavate also, using this and Ovestin outside have finally made this managable and use Vagifem inside, although i do now use less vagifem and have not had as much irritation. Its been a long journey but hopefully got the right mix now.

Im using 4 to 5 vagifem a week but its the Ovestin that has really made the differece on the outside, the vagifem didnt seem to reach there.  Try using the Ovestin cream every night and really rub it in ,not just smearing it on and try every other night with the Vagifem. I sometimes also use Bepanthen on top of the Ovestin as it stops the stinging if im sore. I usually need to use the Dermavate for a couple of weeks after a flare up and then twice a week as maintenace for a few weeks, i can then go for months ok.
Stress is my main flare up trigger and then worrying that its not going to settle again but it always does.
Ive also discovered wearing panty liners is more comfortable, not the scented ones though.

I think its actually classed as the weaker of the estrogens but i think it does the job better on the outside bits.  I use it inside too sometimes. Theres not just one remedy for VA im afraid, its a combination of lots of things, like washing just in water or using Cetraben, i dont wash my pants in soap powder, just a 60° wash then tunble dry as detergent will set me off.  Sitting for long periods of time, not drinking enough and getting dehydrated will leave me dry and sore. YES waterbase helps sometimes but if im sore everything stings and irritates. Dermavate is soothing and since having this added to my regime i have got a lot better, which makes me think the vulva clinic were right and its not just VA but Lichens aswell.  I've been ok for a while now but then sometimes get complacent and take less meds but it always comes back to remind me, so always keep up the treatment even when you do start to improve, it just takes a while . Ive had this now for 5 years and in the first year i never thought it would improve, id be ok  one week then bad again the next and confused what id done different, usually nothing. Use everything youve been given and ask for more if its not enough, id use the Vagifem a.m and the cream at night and put a little inside too, you'll get there.

You can send her a pm through this site if you're not on FB and I'm sure she will be happy to talk to you.

Like Deirdre says it is weaker however the preparations and doses of the estriol products are worked out so they do the same job. So twice a week with Ovestin at whatever dose that is, or the generic estriol - are approx equivalent to Vagifem. Interestingly though I don't know whether this was the 25 mcg dose of vagifem or the 10 mcg - I know there was a study comparing them but I doubt I could find it!!!

Don't forget that there is the Estring which is a silicon ring which delivers 7 mcg per day of estradiol so you can just insert it and forget about it for 3 months although it is removal ( a bit like the contraceptive cap I imagine but without the diaphragm bit!).
