Constant pain week after mirena coil insertion
« on: September 10, 2019, 08:58:49 AM »

Hi there, I had a hysteroscopy, polyp removal and mirena coil insertion last Wednesday under a general anaesthetic. I am hoping I'll get on OK with the mirena as the progesterone part of my HRT. I use 4 pumps of estrogel daily and was previously using 7 days of utrogestan vaginally (Prof Studd regime). I am 43 and using HRT for PMDD.

I didn't have much pain the first few days, just the odd cramp and some spotting. I started properly bleeding on Sunday and have had severe pain all day Sunday, yesterday and now today. I've just been sent home from work as burst into tears. The pain has been keeping me up at night. I've made an appointment to see a nurse at my GP surgery this afternoon - I'm going to ask her to check if the threads are in place in case it's moved and to ask if this is normal.

I wondered if anyone else experienced severe pain after a mirena coil insertion? I would really like to persevere with the mirena but didn't expect this pain (I was much more worried about potential emotional side effects). I think my body is might be trying to expel it. If anyone else experienced this, did it get better?

Hi, just thought I'd post an update in case anyone has similar issues after mirena insertion and reads this in the future. I went to see the nurse yesterday and she was great and sympathetic. She checked the threads using a speculum to find my cervix and said she could see them which is a good sign and means the mirena is in the right place. She then prescribed me codeine to help with the pain (I can't take ibuprofen due to sensitive stomach so had just been taking paracetamol). She also said she would be able to remove it if things get unbearable. Just knowing I have that option made me feel better. I'm not sure a GP would have been so sympathetic, especially so soon after having it inserted. I've written down her name so can ask for an appointment with her if necessary!

I took some codeine last night and slept better. This morning the cramps are back and painful with a lot of bleeding but I'm feeling more positive and planning to work from home (I had day off work yesterday). I've been on the Prof Studd regime of 4 pumps estrogel and 7 days utrogestan for over 2 years and I'm wondering if my lining has built up a lot in that time and the mirena is now getting rid of it? I'm going to do my best to persevere because I'm hopeful once this heavy bleeding stops the pain will subside.

I think I was getting some progesterone side effects yesterday as couldn't stop crying but I do feel better today, so fingers crossed, I'll be OK.

Ask if you can go for an ultrasound to see if it's in the right place, I had a scan 6 weeks after the gynaecologist put mine in as had one expel itself years ago x

Thanks Countrygirl, that's a good idea. I think if the pain doesn't ease I'll ask for an ultrasound in case it's not in the right place. I hope your mirena is working well for you now x
