HRT and migraine
« on: August 18, 2019, 07:37:07 PM »

Hiya ladies. I've been plagued with migraines on utrogestan part of cycle (12 days 200) each month.

I was under neurologist for migraine in my 30s   to mid 40s but it seemed to have eased off after 45/46 only getting a couple a year. I'm 54 now.

I've got a gp appointment tommorow morning. i need a solution to the migraine maybe a different progesterone  but I fear iif I mention it she might take me off HRT altogether. I had oopherectomy a year ago so I realy feel I need the eastrogen replacement.  I  dont want it taken away from me.

Has anyone had any experience of this. Do docs tend to stop HRT ialtogether if you have migraine?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Xx

Tc I've had migraines since a teen, especially aura ones and the ones where I get a numb face, but no pain for which I'm still under the dr for, but was told I just wouldn't be offered the tablet type of hrt because of them x

Thanks CG. I get nausea with mine and what I call "black flies flying about in front of my eyes. I also get such a sore scalp I cant touch my hair. And  with a realy bad one my fingers and my lips go numb. I even slur my speech.  Sometumes they last 2 days. So I realy cant be putting up with this 12 days a month.

I sympathise wholly. They are so debilitating.

Hopefully Tc you will find a different progesterone that works better for you as it sounds like that part of the hrt is the problem, good luck with the drs and let us know how it goes x

Hi Tc

This page is useful. It's a link to information aimed for doctors prescribing HRT for women with migraine.

https://thebms.org.uk/publications/tools-for-clinicians/migraine-and-hrt/

In the middle of the page there's a link to a PDF that you could print and take to your doctor (the pdf file called 'download tool for clinician').

Here is the related link that is information for women with migraine and looking for HRT:

https://www.womens-health-concern.org/help-and-advice/factsheets/migraine-and-hrt/

You can also print off that as a PDF and take it to the doctors.

Hope it helps  :)

Flaky. Thank you for taking the time to reply and share the links.

Realy interesting, as CG says. Looking at hormones and HRT from the migraine angle.

Very interesting to read about the ovary removal issue. All the way through this I've thought that having a missing link in the chain must make a difference .

It would seem from a migraine standpoint conti is preferable. . I can see why. When I took the utrogestan continually during the first 2 weeks I had migraine but after that. It  stopped.  I stopped using conti as after a few months it caused other intolerable side effects but the cycle is causing migraine.  So I'm stuck.!!

It seems eastrogen is the main culprit with migraine so it's odd that mine is worse on the progesterone phase  I wonder whether it is a direct side effect of the drug itself or maybe the progesterone is creating an imbalance somehow.  As soon as I start the progesterone I get night sweats which I dont on E only phase. Wish I could work out why.

I saw gp this morning. I told her about the migraine  and i said if I have to give up HRT altogether that will be the reason. Rather surprisingly she urged me not to give up. She suggested until my meno clinic appt in October  that I go to 7 days. And Shes referred me for a scan.

I'm concerned about the 7 days TBH. I dont know anyone on such high eastrogen who is only taking 7 days.

Xxxxxx

Hi Tc, there are plenty of ladies taking it on 7 days - most GP's consider it controversial so you are lucky to have such an elightened GP! - Now... I can't put your mind at rest about doing 7 days considering you are on such high levels of oestrogen, but what I would say is that if she has suggested 7 days I am pretty sure she will be happy to monitor you closely and she obviously has her finger on the pulse if she knows about the 7 day method - most GP's don't have a clue.

7 days utro is part of the Studd method for progesterone intolerant women and is well recorded.  Stop fretting honey - it'll give you a headache  ;) ;D xxxxx much love.

Thank you lady.

After 9 months of having my HRT managed by the openly anti HRT gynae oncologist I finally got moved 2 doors down the corridor to the gynae meno specialist  in June and she seemed to know her stuff.  it was she who suggested a cycle of 12 days and failing that 7 she mentioned studd by name. She said she knew panay personally  and referred me to him. So imy  gp was going by her letter. , she cant even sneeze without a letter from a consultant but she has sent me for a scan so shes done the right thing
