A man went into Hospital for surgery under General Anaethestic. I don't know how many people saw him prior to him going to theatre but in my day it would have been:
After being seen by a GP and then by the Consultant in a Clinic - put on the waiting list:
Admitted by an SHO or Registrar with Nurse in attendance - wedding ring, false teeth, false limbs [I kid you not], pace maker, hair piece ..... all noted and ticked
Name band applied with DoBirth, Name, Hospital Records Number, Ward
Operation discussed with Consultant and Team
Patient seen prior to surgery by Anesthetist who would check if there were false teeth and again in the pre-med room
So how can, in this day and age, a patient swallow his false teeth
during routine surgery. Then be told 3 days later that he has an infection from the intubation tube when he returns to A&E due to not being able to eat .........
