Rant, Rant and more Rant!! - Oral HRT Ban
« on: June 18, 2019, 12:22:21 PM »

Hi.  I'm having a rant (in case you hadn't realised).  I have been on Femoston 2/10 for a year and my yearly review came up two weeks ago.  I saw a different doctor to usual who started to question if I was on the correct HRT based on my medical history.  She then flagged it up with my normal doctor in their weekly meeting.  Reasoning being that as I suffer with 'migraine with aura' (which I must have had once or twice at some point in my life but am barely a migraine sufferer at all now) I can not take the combined pill so why am I being allowed to take the combined HRT in pill form.  Pill form being a higher dosage of hormones that go into your liver and therefore could contribute to a stroke.  My normal doctor went back to our local specialist on menopause, who we consulted a year ago, and has been told there is nothing in the guidelines to say someone with 'migraine with aura' cannot take oral HRT.  But the 'other doctor' is more theoretical and has now banned the practice from prescribing me with them.  So I am having to go back on patches (which they tell me are in short supply) and they've put me on the ones that made me bleed so heavily and flood everywhere.  Now I had ablation done a week ago so hopefully I won't have the flooding problems but I am just so pissed off that after a year of being 'normal' and happy I am now back to having a piece of plastic stuck on my arse for the next 10 years!!  >:( :( :'(

We have a GP in our Practice who is dead set on Statins  :argue:

What does the menopause clinic suggest if the Surgery won't prescribe it:

My normal doctor went back to our local specialist on menopause, who we consulted a year ago, and has been told there is nothing in the guidelines to say someone with 'migraine with aura' cannot take oral HRT.

I would think this is against the Hypocratic Oath! can the M.Clinic not prescribe directly or ask which surgery in your area will do so on their recommendation?  It is wrong that 1 GP can go 'against' another, however, patients no longer have a family doctor but are over-seen by the Practice as a whole.

Oh god, sadielouise78.
I'm really sorry to hear this....I'm on Femoston Conti, and I suffer with migraines, ok, not with aura, but I've a quite a lot of them, I even have silent ones, and sometimes get aura with those, but those are few and far between, my doctor knows about my migraines and didn't say anything. I think it's only a problem IF they only start AFTER starting hrt. So because I was having them before, I was under the impression it was ok...
Patches didn't suite me either, so you have my sympathy.
Can't you go back and see someone else,? I would.
Keep us informed plz....xxxx

Thanks for the replies.  I think the 'other doctor' is claiming to know better as my normal doctor is 'just a nurse practitioner' (although with two degrees and a masters!).

I didn't know there was such a thing as a menopause clinic??  And who is Dr Currie?

I'm actually due to move doctors soon.  I moved house 3 years ago and I'm now well outside the catchment area but have stayed there as I still have my house in the catchment area and was waiting to get several medical issues out of the way before moving.  Maybe it's time to see someone else?!

Jiilydoll, I'm not sure as to whether it's only if you have migraines with aura after you start taking it, it's definitely not allowed to take the combined pill whenever you've had the attacks which ruled me out of that one a long time ago.

A Nurse Practitioner isn't a qualified Dr though  :-\ so your GP is probably correct but it would be nice if he/she took on board what the menopause specialist suggested.

Make sure that the new Surgery supports menopause treatment, some don't  :-\

Hi,

the recomendation is that you use gels and patches if you have migranies, but if you don't get them now after taking it for years then what is the issue. Ask to speak to the practice manager and stand your ground and Dr Currie is the creator of Menopause matters, go to the site map at the top of the page.  ;)you can email to her for a fee .

Hi CLKD,

No she is not a doctor but she is much more knowledgeable on menopause than the other doctors in the surgery.  I've got a patch stuck on me so I'll just have to see how it goes.

Regards,

Whether or not a Nurse Practitioner knows more than other members of Staff at a Practice doesn't give her clout - the Owner of the Practice which is usually a group of GPs, will have final say.  Stuck between a rock and a hard place ?
