Hmm... I think old Land rovers are a tad overrated. We had a diesel mark 2 - acceleration of a squashed slug, top speed 40mph, so noisy you had to shout to be heard, turning circle of a field and drum brakes that made sure you kept you  distance from the car in front. Kept it til it was 21 and sold it for £1k, the same as parents paid for it when it was 2 years old (my mother was keen to give it to me so she could drive something else).

Finding a car that is suitable and you like PLUS having as low an environmental impact as possible, is a nightmare. I suppose there is a difference between a dream car and one you would actually buy.

I don't drive so my criteria is narrower, eg comfort, colour etc., can't say cars get me particularly excited.

You're right about workhorses. It got me home from 40 miles away with the horse in tow and a piston in the sump - very, very slowly. Can't imagine anything else that would have done that (perished rubber=total engine rebuild).
