Does peri menopause ramp up just before menopause happens?
« on: November 25, 2018, 12:29:42 PM »

Hi.

I've been in peri for 10 years and it was bad when it first appeared but settled into familiar symptoms.
I'm now almost 50 and having a bad time 7 weeks in pjs after a major melt down about health anxiety. I still believe if the physical symptoms went I'd be fine no need for HRT.

I've read that peri gets worse the year before the menopause occurs.. is that true?

Hi Roseenglish
I can totally relate to that, I'm sure symptoms ramp up before we actually hit post menopause! I've just turned 51 & had minor symptoms up until March & then all of a sudden I felt bonkers with every symptom under the sun which drove me to start taking hrt transdermal. I've felt 80% better since then but now I'm having the odd feelings return again so I suppose it's time to increase the dose. What regime are you on? This malarkey is worse than puberty isn't it, hoping you feel better soon & remember you are not alone in this journey & this wonderful site can help so much.

Hello Roseenglish.

I've often thought that if my physical sensations of quivery, jittery feelings would go then I would cope much better. Indeed sometimes they do disappear and on those occasions I feel almost normal and wonder what all the fuss is about! I wonder if these symptoms start the panic by tricking the brain into believing that something is genuinely wrong. I would also love to know why these horrible sensations suddenly disappear but then recur, something must be happening to alter the body's chemistry but if there are particular triggers I can never work them out.

Wishing everyone well.

Don't remember puberty issues and never had PMS until I hit 40. Took me two years to work out my new symptoms were cyclical and learned about peri.
That was ten years ago, I hobbled along with most of peri symptoms but by and large life was ok.
The 💩 hit the fan two month ago, physical and mental. Bed ridden with horrible symptoms and very bad anxiety and depression...
My hormones levels in may 2018 Oestrogen was minus 18! My FSH 70.
So menopausal range but still having cycles.

I started Oestrogel 7 Nov was ok but last four days absolute hell. All my physical and mental symptoms increased by 10.
Think I'm due on my first period since starting HRT and I've never felt as bad in my life, feels counter intuitive to continue when you're feeling worse than ever but I have to do just that,,, 3 months they say x

How about yourself? How long before HRT helped significantly?

Absolutely YES in my experience. 18 months in and things are levelling somewhat...but underneath that is the very real fear that it might happen again, and this time I'm not sure I'd survive it xx

Christ I had NO idea...truly. I thought my peri symptoms might peak,,,I might get bad insomnia or worse hot flushes and night sweats, I had not anticipated new symptoms I'd never even heard about.
Peri was a walk in the park... 😬

Hi

I also had no idea with what kind of s*** one can be hit during peri menopause and for me this year (likely late stage peri, nearly 49, and bleeds many months apart now) has been the worst by far. Had all sorts of symptoms and being "jittery" and nauseous and dizzy with lack of sleep (hot flushes were not too bad but have picked up now) and lots of other symptoms I could not believe one could even get. Anxiety and mood swings can be crazy as well, a thing I never had before until some time this year. I am now trying to "keep calm and carry on" but that can be easier said than done at times and the most effective way for me to keep things a bit balanced is exercising and brisk walking. Things are improving a bit long term compared with earlier this year. If not then it is time to try HRT for me. Wishing all the best, Anna

I suspect late peri and early post meno are much the same thing for many women in terms of ramped up symptoms.

Just because there's no bleed, the hormones can still be very volatile and, in some case, clear cycles can still be read from symptoms - just without the bleed at the end.

It seems that once you clearly notice things calming down that it's a sign that your brain is adapting to the new hormonal state and no longer triggering the intense adrenal spikes.

I could have written this myself.  50 also, starting peri and symptoms (the very worst, anxiety and panic disorder).  Everything has just increased tenfold though I still have good days they are fewer.

Hi EnglishRose
It really is a minefield this peri lark, hrt worked quite quickly for me but I do find when my own cycle decides to kick in & I ovulate again my symptoms return, so I increase my estrogen until I feel better which seems to work for me. I have also been eating really healthy, drinking twice as much water, I take aloe vera for gut health & lots of omega rich foods. Also I take time out for me regardless of whether I have time or not lol.

Hi,

Yes, absolutely, things were going downhill symptom wise the last year of peri, on entering menopause a few months ago it was like being hit by a bus.

Definitely did with me!

Was quite a relief to get some sort of explanation for all the horrible symptoms I had been suffering just prior to having my hormones checked.

I'm 52 and peri lasted roughly 10 years for me with peak disruption from October last year until I went on hrt.  I was diagnosed as menopausal in May of this year.

Sounds like me. Ten years then horrible new symptom appeared in Oct this year.
May I ask what we're your symptoms (new) before your hormones were checked?
What were your hormones levels?
And how long did HRT take to work for you?

I've been on Oestrogel for a month just had the worst period in several years and am sick in bed with my new symptoms.
I do believe they're hormonal as they wax and wane at the same time my deep depression does.

Thank you xx
