Biodentical hormone therapy
« on: October 31, 2018, 02:27:21 PM »

Hello , on regular hrt for horrendous joint and muscle pain which has only improved slightly since starting hrt 1year ago . Problem is the side effect of enormous tender breasts which I just cannot tolerate any more !
A friend has mentioned biodentical hormone therapy which has less side effects ?? Anyone any experience of these !?

Hi and welcome to mm

Which HRT you on? It sounds to me as though you may be on too high a dose? Most hrts have bioidentical oestrogen these days but some have synthetic progesterone but there is a bioidentical progesterone available on prescription called Utrogestan. The regime would the oestrogen as patch or gel and Utrogestan capsules used for 12 days each month.
You would still get sore breasts on any hrt type if on a high dose but often the tender breasts settle down once the body adjusts.
You may have been told to consider compounded bio identical hormones from an alternative specialist therapist but these compounded hormones are not tested so are therefore not considered safe - so don't waste your money.
If you tell us what HRT you are on we may be able to suggest something that might give you less breast tenderness. DG x

Thank you ! I am on Femoston conti 1mg/5mg . Iniatially all was ok on it but now been on it 9 months and the breast pain is far worse . Joint /muscle pain still continues which is why I am thinking now of coming of hrt completely?

How old are you and what menopause symptoms were you wanting to control with HRT?
Muscle and joint pain can be helped with exercise.
I think tender breasts is more common when on a conti hrt so you could try the sequential version but this would mean a monthly bleed.

I am 57 .i had finished my periods for a year so was def menopausal when I started hrt , literally only to try and alleviate my joint pain (I was walking like a 90 year old on waking !!) my other symptoms ie hot flushes etc were manageable. I do exercise every day , and it does get easier.i take an array of supplements from glucosamine and turmeric plus menopace and am using an ARC  tens like machine .i really would not like a monthly bleed again . Many thanks
