Increasing 1/2 HRT Patch
« on: September 17, 2018, 08:52:46 AM »

Hello ladies,
I have been on Evorel Conti patches for 3 and 1/2 weeks now (Post menopausal and 1st time on HRT)

But after about 1 and 1/2 weeks I started with awful stomach cramps and nausea. (The hot flushes disappeared practically overnight tho)

I phoned the surgery and the duty-doctor said to cut the patch in 1/2 for a while, which I have been doing for 2 weeks now.

On Friday I had a follow-up phone appointment with my GP. He said I should now go onto a full patch and to phone him again in another month.
But last night I didnt sleep due to such bad cramps and nausea.

I think its too early to increase? What do you ladies think? Has anybody else started their patches by cutting them in 1/2, and if so, how long did you do that for to build up?

Thank you. xx

I am taking evorel sequi and was advised by specialist meno dr to start with half a patch for the first two months. I was suffering from nausea before so hard to say if the patch affected it, but it seemed like during the conti phase I felt initially nauseous but it wore off after a couple of hours. Hopefully someone will come along with more experience than me.

Hi there  - sorry I can't help with the half patch issue but yes I would stay perhaps on half a patch for a full cycle and then increase for the second month. Better not to chop and change in the middle of the cycle eg if you used full patch for two weeks ( the oestrogen part) and then half patch for the conti part - you will get less prog so might not be enough. If you are still ovulating then you will produce some of your own... Some nausea may be expected when you first increase oestrogen but this should settle. Also depends where in menopause you are too the nearer to menopause or if post then you will need more oestrogen as your own will be much lower , but if you are several years post-meno your body also needs more time to adjust.

See what happens at the end of this cycle. If you're going to use half a patch then better to use it on the oestrogen only patches and then go up to full patch perhaps on the conti ones - or keep to the same patch size (half a patch) for the whole cycle and then change?

Hurdity,
I'm sorry but I dont understand? What do you mean by oestrogen only patch and conti ones? I only have Conti patches, which contain BOTH hormones.

I also wont get a "cycle" will I? I have been post meno for well over 2 years.

I'm a bit confused??

But anyway tonight I have just put on 1/2 a patch. I'm going to stay on 1/2 until these bad cramps subside...however long it takes.

Ali61 - you are right as you are on a Conti patch.

It could be the progesterone that is causing the problems and you may be better on a different hrt. X

Hi Ali
Instead of going to a full patch just go a little more than half, then move to 3/4 and keep going until you get to a full patch.

I did 2-3 weeks on each size. Till I got to a full patch. Was on them for 5 years, now decreasing a bit at a time to see if my symptoms come back.

Thank you littleminnie. I will give your suggestion a go. I guess I'm just impatient to get rid of the cramps and get better. :)

Hi. I've been using Evorel conti for three years. At first I had bad stomach cramps and nausea, that lasted about 6 weeks. Hope that helps

Thank you Vickypk,
It's good to hear other peoples experiences. Stops me from wanting to panic too quickly that things wont improve.

The nausea does seem better today, not noticed it much...but still got bad cramps right now. I'm using a hot water bottle. xx

Hi Ali 61
It should settle. I remember the cramps were quite bad, felt like period cramps, just didn't feel right on the patches at first, but all fine now

Hi ali61

So sorry for confusing you - I confuse myself sometimes!!! My eye lit on shrosphirelass's regime of Evorel sequi and I wrongly wrote as if this was what you were on. No wonder you were confused!! Apologies again - but now you have some great advice from the others ! :)

I'm on the sequi but the conti part at the moment and have started bleeding and the cramps are quite bad. I'm hoping like you that it'll settle down after the first few months.

Glad the nausea is better today.
