Stomach cramps on HRT
« on: September 15, 2018, 10:55:56 AM »

Hi Ladies,
I started Evorel Conti patches 3 weeks ago. After 5 days I got horrendous stomach cramps.
Finally,3 days later, I spoke to my GP, and he told me to cut the patch in half for a while.
I did that and 1 day later the cramps stopped.

However yesterday the cramps returned and are bad again today. Last night in bed was very painful and its bad again today.
I am still only on 1/2 a patch.

Most of my life I was on the contraceptive pill, Eugynon and then Microgynon. I read up on it, and it seems the hormones in those Pills are the same ones as used in Evorel Conti?
I was absolutely fine on the Pill all those years.
So I cant see that I am intolerant to anything in the Patch?

Has anybody else had these bad cramps when starting the HRT, and if so, how long did it take to settle down please?
I dont know whether to just go ahead and use a full patch or just wait for all the cramps to go?

Hopefully somebody out there will have some experiences of their own to help me?
Ali xx

Evorel Conti has norethisterone as the progesterone.  This is a different progesterone to the ones in Eugynon and Microgynon.  It could be the norethisterone that isn't suiting you.

The other combined patch is Femseven Conti But I believe there is a manufacturers problem with this and it's not available at the moment.

Your other alternatives are Oestrogen patches or gel with Utrogestan or Mirena Coil. X

Oestrogen in the form of patches or gel is transdermal.  Utrogestan is a capsule not a tablet so would be fine. It's the oestrogen that needs to be transdermal. Utrogestan is kinder than the synthetic progesterones in the combined patches.

I am on Femseven Conti and had nausea and lower abdomen pains for around 6-7 weeks of being on the patch. I'm now on week 11 and was hoping it would calm my anxiety. I get around 5 days of no anxiety then it comes back again. Unsure whether the patches are making it worse :( try and persevere if they are helping you with other symptoms xx

Ye, i got this when i first started femeston 1/10.
Had about a month of ‘gut rot' sort of upper right side- though ohoh gallbladder, but all settled down after that- in fact all my previous ‘ibs' type symptoms have gone too

I'm on Femseven Conti and after 13 weeks I've ripped it off.  Had bad period type pains on and off since starting it and now today got pinkish blood and bad period pain. Can't cope if it brings periods back. I was on the mini pill too just over 3 years ago and was fine on that. I went on HRT for anxiety.

Hi, I started on Evoril conte patches at beginning of February 1st box nearly done).  For the past month ive been bleeding quite heavily and the cramps are awful.  I mentioned it to my GP and she said, if I could,  to stay on them for 6 months.
I've got Lymhoma so im always think about that awful C word.

Hi Flembo - welcome to the forum.

Conti HRT is known to cause bleeding in lots of women for the first six months of treatment so up to this time, although I can understand your anxiety, it is considered to be a known side effect. The cramping is also very common in the beginning and should lessen in the next couple of months. Is it your first time trying HRT?  Also, how old are you and were you still having periods before you began this HRT?

You will find lots of support on here and you may wish to post in New Members to introduce yourself as this is an old thread and may not be noticed by as many members so you might not get as many replies.

This is interesting.

I have a post up elsewhere about stomach stabbing. For me it's anytime I add something to attempt to balance my haywire peri hormones.

Currently it's progesterone causing a massive flair. I've had loads of tests and as it flairs up/down I assume it's a severe form of IBS.

Where are your 'stomach' pains? Lower or upper abdomin?

Sgvthikts - gut rot. That sounds like mine. Did it just disappear once you had been consistently dosing?

Hi,

My stomach pains are like someone is wringing my colon out!
It’s actually not too bad today-yey  :)

The mornings tend to be the worst, I wake up and think what god awful symptoms will I have today! This morning it’s a headache, nausea, weepy.. have made myself have a shower and go outside before the rain starts.
I’m thinking of having a private consultation with a menopause specialist as don’t really have confidence in my GP in regards the best treatment for me.
