Mirena insertion issues
« on: August 22, 2018, 09:21:50 AM »

I've just got back from an appointment at my GPs to have the mirena coil fitted for the progesterone element of my HRT (I currently use utrogestan) but unfortunately the GP couldn't insert it. She got the insertion tool in (a thin plastic tube) but said my uterus is twisty and it bent the tube so she couldn't insert the coil. She tried twice and both times the tube bent  :-\. She's therefore referring me to a local hospital to have it done. She said they'd use a local anaesthetic to numb my cervix which should help them to insert it.

I'm really disappointed as went through the procedure but have no coil! The procedure itself wasn't too bad - it was uncomfortable and crampy but I was expecting a lot worse. Has anyone else had similar issues with insertion? x

Thanks DG. Here's your reply from the other thread:

Lucyloo - I think quite a few women have problems with the insertion of the Mirena. Personally I think they should always be fitted by a specialist who does it a lot.
The first time they tried to fit me with one, it was a locum doctor at the meno clinic, - he didn't read my notes so didn't know I hadn't had any HRT for 3 years(I was very post meno by then), so my uterus was very atrophied!!!  Needless to say he was unable to get it in and it was so painful I went blue and nearly fainted - he got quite panicked about it actually.  After I had had some oral and local oestrogen for a few months, the experienced doctor managed to fit it with few problems.   BTW were you advised to take a couple of Ibruprofen beforehand to ease any discomfort?  DG x

My reply:
Really glad you managed to have it fitted in the end DG. And that's good to know I'm not alone having insertion problems! I believe the GP who tried to fit mine was experienced but she said I needed a local anaesthetic so they could get the insertion tube past a hard bit of tissue that was bending the tube (eek!) Luckily it wasn't too painful. It did hurt and feel crampy when she measured my uterus and inserted the tube but I kept my breathing slow and tried to relax and breath through the discomfort which helped. I was quite shaky afterwards (legs took a while to stop shaking!) and needed to lie down for 5 mins but I was expecting it to be more painful than it was. I'm really disappointed that it didn't work and that I have to go through it all again. But never mind, just one of those things. Yes I was advised to take pain relief beforehand. I took 2 paracetamol 30 mins before as I find ibruprofen gives me acid reflux but I think I'll try ibruprofen with an antacid med next time as it'll probably work better than paracetamol for the discomfort x
