Shingles returning?
« on: August 01, 2018, 06:05:52 PM »

Had shingles quite some time ago,  the start of the year. Quite a small area.

Now, I started feeling a bit groggy, and where I had shingles before, a sore weepy spot has appeared. Could it be coming back? I thought it didn't return to the same place?

I am meant to be going away at the weekend to start training for a new role, a very long drive.

I cannot miss it, but am worried as the anti viral meds made me feel worse than the shingles last time!

I guess I better just get to the doctor in the morning.

Then let us know. Or go to a Pharmacist?

It was in a location I didn't want to get out in our not very private pharmacy. GP thinks it could be the shingles reactivating because of the busy situation I'm in and has given me the acyclovir tablets saying if it doesn't improve to take them until it clears up.

Interestingly, also said you do not have to take all the tablets-just take til it clears up-  as it isn't a medicine you have to complete the course of...which has confused me a bit as it says you DO on the packet.

To be effective to heal shingles and reduce pain the medication has to be given within 72 hours! and the whole course has to be taken.  I understand your reluctance to show the World ;-).  GP should know if it is shingles, I didn't think that they returned down the same nerve route? Off for a look see

From NHS Choices:

Shingles is an infection that causes a painful rash. See a GP as soon as possible if you think you have it.
Check if you have shingles
The first signs of shingles can be:
a tingling or painful feeling in an area of skin
a headache or feeling generally unwell
A rash will appear a few days later.

Patient.info is also a good link.
