Ground wasps
« on: May 11, 2017, 02:32:02 PM »

Are currently building a nest under a flower bed in the middle of my small lawn. It's where my old dog likes to lie in the shade so they will have to go.
Any ideas as I have a tree and bedding plants really near and don't want to kill them.

Help. ::)

The only way is to kill them; pour boiling water down the hole or run a hose-pipe in there.  .........   they won't return to it next year they only use a nest once.  Ask advice from the local bloke, should be details in the Yellow Pages.  I try not kill anything like that as they do 'good' around the garden  ::).   Old Dog is more important though!

Goodness, you need to be rid of those. However, depending on how many are there already, probably safer to get someone in to deal with them. I would be scared that hot water would anger them & they'd retaliate en masse!

Two kettles of boiling water have been poured over....lots of mad wasps.
I just don't want them near a very very elderly dog and I've been getting them in the house too. Hubby thinks he can deal with it...as they do  ::)....If he can't then I will get in touch with the council and pay to get this sorted.

Any other ideas very welcome.

The ground wasp is also known as the german wasp - bit bigger than the usual wasp. We've had them in the past - they love old, disused rat runs in flower borders or mouse holes. Great for keeping your pest population down but not so good for the dog! We have normal ones building a nest over the back door as they usually do. The last two years it has failed so I'll be interested to see whether this one goes full term.

Hope this nest  fails. Seemingly there are plans afoot involving tubes and "stuff"
It's just exactly where the dog likes to go. Given the fact she is pretty near deaf and has a cataract it's not easy to guide her away from her favourite place.
I will give hubby one go at this and then the experts are being called in. I can see me loosing a bit of lawn to get to the nest.
I can't  beleive that from a few wasps over the past few days we have gone to really large numbers so quickly.

The nest formations are fabulous.  We have wasps collecting water from our ponds and flying off ........ rarely find the nests except for the 1 Himself walked into last year  :o  ::) ....... with the top of his head. OUCH!

Wasps need vinegar, bees need bicarb - in case anyone gets stung ;-)

We've had these Mrs B, the ground nests are pretty easy to deal with. I think we bought some sort of powder that we puffed into the hole. However tell hubby to be very careful as they have look out wasps that will sting anything they see as a threat. Hubby was stung repeatedly  and developed an allergy. Subsequent stings made him react very violently.

Whilst I'm sure they have benefits in nature, wasps don't make particularly good close neighbours. One of the nests was within metres of our kitchen doors and the pesky things frequently flew in and caused problems. I remember once one getting caught in my daughter's hair and repeatedly stinging her scalp, it was awful!

Good luck with dealing with the critters x

I don't get them, nor ants, in the house as I put jars of cheap jam - on the side away from the door ways, so that wasps can get in and out to take as much jam as they want. ........ there's real fisticuffs if wasps from different nests go into the same jar at once  ::)
