Author Topic: connection between low oestrogen and acute/chronic mouth ulcers?  (Read 7364 times)

Hi all,
Saw a meno specialist on Thursday and she said that she'd never heard of low oestrogen in connection with mouth ulcers before. I have found that when I'm having flushes and painful bones associated with low oestrogen I also have acute and chronic mouth ulcers (I am predisposed to them anyway but I hardly get them when my hormone balance is good).

Just wondered if anyone on here has experienced similar or heard of this?

I've not heard of it but I guess anythings possible

I always had them up until my mid 30s then they went but lately I've been getting them again.  I do know low B12 can cause them and I've attributed my new onset of them to dry mouth, I could be wrong and not investigated it but just assumed

Yes, same here, they came back at peri-meno and then when my hormone levels dropped again. Could be dry mouth but I have that now and no ulcers. I did see some stuff written on this but can't seem to find it now x

My mouth ulcers as good as cleared up once on HRT.

Menopause dries up all the mucosal membranes , dry mouth equals for some ulcers, shocked she hasn't heard of it or thought it's an absolute possibility.

Yes do was i as she is an hrt/menopause specialist. Do you know if it's oestrogen or progesterone linked or both?

We all suffer for different reasons then as I suffered them for years since childhood up to 35/36 ish and low oestrogen wouldn't have been the culprit then in my 20s

I've developed nocturnal dry eye and dry mouth in the last couple of years along with double vision and ulcers have resumed yet I've always had really good oestrogen levels and been on hrt for 18 years

It's good you've found your reason though

Have you seen a Dentist recently?

I have chronic gum disease which means regular deep cleans at dentist/hygienist plus I have to clean for up to half an hour twice a day myself to ensure absolutely no plaque/ bacteria. I've lost two teeth since it flared up again when meno started and it's a constant battle. Few ulcers at the moment though.

Ahh, i have to sip water through the night as keep waking with dry mouth was due to not seeming to breathe through my nose which seems blocked. I will search dry mouth on here for what helps. Yes I wasn't that impressed with the specialist. She told me to speak to my dentist about the ulcers (which of course I have repeatedly) and I feelt like saying 'duh I didn't think if that'  ???

Hi Peacegirl - just a thought, but you don't use a toothpaste containing SLS, do you? That is known to cause ulcers.

Chronic mouth ulcers can be a sign of low vitamin b12 and folate.
Do look up the symptoms and request a blood test.
Also they can also come with autoimmune disease.

Everything  was checked and I changed toothepaste but not related which is how I ended up thinking it was oestrogen. No ulcers at moment or very few light ones. I am post meno (or rather its assumed I am as I am 57) I was just interested to know if anyone else knew of the connection.  :)
