I think it must have been a welcome release to be honest. He had a dreadful illness poor man. I loved his famous song.

When you're alone in your bed"

He was on an old episode of TOTP the other night.

I loved that song too :)

"Here we go again"  :-\

Not sure why you said this CLKD - but PEOPLE DIE !!!! Including famous people.

The reason there seem to be more people has been explained:

The population is higher now and increasing every year so there are more people to die.
The baby boomers started to become famous in the 60's with the advent of modern popular culture - and they are now getting to an age where they are dying (aside from the premature and unexpected deaths).
Partly because of the baby boomers and also the concept of popular culture and the widespread use of social media there are more "celebrities" anyway - especially since the 1960's
With the prevalence of social media and online publicity - more "celebrity" deaths are publicised anyway.

We should not be surprised! However if is of course sad when anyone dies.....

I think it's probably because we are becoming more aware of our own mortality as we age.  Many of the famous folk who have passed in recent times may have been our idols & within our "generation."  My brother being 10 years older than me, feels it much more than I.

When someone whose work I have appreciated (e.g. a writer) dies, I'm sad that there will be no more new books from them, but otherwise, I don't see that their deaths are any more tragic than any other.  I tend to be more upset by the deaths of ordinary people, especially who die very young, like the 10 year old girl who died of cardiac arrest on a plane flight at about the same time as Carrie Fisher.  She only got a very brief mention in the news, but every time I heard someone say how tragic it was the Carrie Fisher died 'so young', I thought of that little girl who died so much younger.

You're quite right Dorothy. We hear about celebs. I get upset hearing about young folk who die in their prime & those battling incurable diseases. Very sad indeed.
