Painful sex
« on: January 07, 2017, 10:02:43 PM »

Sorry if this is too graphic but I am interested in advice.

I have tried a few different hrt to balance off hot flushes, low mood, etc and and Sept I was swopped onto Utrogestan 100mg tablets (every day, no break, no bleed) and Santagena gel. The up sides are good sleep, no flushes, ok mood. The down side is sex is very painful with penetration virtually impossible. It isn't dryness so much as the vagina no longer stretching adequately and feeling like razor blades being inserted in most positions. Does that make sense? Any advice? We are using lubricants

Even though you are using systemic HRT you definitely sound like you need topical oestrogen too. I use Vagifem but there is Ovestin and another one too, name has escaped me on that one!
Use every night for two weeks and then find a maintenance dose that suits you.
I don't even need to use lubricant  these days for sex when Vagifem is working well.

Lubrication is vital for sex when meno hits. Experiment with various lubricants specifically for sex - I have found a Durex version that offers extra long lasting lube that is great. I also massage SYLK vaginal moisturiser around the vaginal opening to keep things subtle. DG x

Get some treatment for vaginal atrophy anyway, and make sure that plenty of lube is used.  There are other ways of sex too ;-)

Oh yes, I have had nothing inside me for years but we are ok with other things.  The fact it hurt me made it difficult for him. Now the pressure if off and we have to be inventive especially as he has his own issues with it all  :)

Thanks for your helpful comments. As my partner lives abroad we don't get together very often so it is more difficult to try different solutions than if we slept in the same bed every night! We have been using a lot of massage oil; would lubricants have the same effect?

Great to hear back from others,  thanks

Sorry if too much information but you could try sex toys from Ann Summers and good lubrication whilst your partner is away.  Vagifem internally and Sylk externally are really helping me.  I was splitting like paper cuts everyone OH entered me now it's not happening

Experiment whilst he's away so you're ready each time he's back x

Do not put massage oil on lady bits  :o - use a recommended product for the vagina.  I have found KY Jelly as good a product as any over the years.

Massage oil wouldn't be as effective as lubricants designed for use during sex. KY is OK but there are products that are longer lasting which really help.
I agree with Annie - I would definitely ask for some Vagifem to increase the oestrogen to the whole urogenital area and I massage my perineum with SYLK vaginal moisturiser every day to keep things more elastic.
I think there are special vaginal dilating instruments you can buy that help to keep things flexible as well. DG x

Yes lubricant is supposed to be one of the best.  I asked my GP about getting it on prescription (as it is available) but she said they are not allowed to prescribe certain items that people can buy for themselves, so guess they are trying to make cutbacks.

I'd never heard of Sylk but a GP gave me a prescription for it x
