How can I stay cool during the night?
« on: January 06, 2017, 10:14:36 AM »

Do any of you have any tips for staying cool and dry during the night?

I can't take HRT. When I go to sleep my feet feel like they're on fire so I sleep with them out of the bed covers, sometimes I put cold wet flannels on them! I get nightmares from being so hot. I wake up soaked but not every night. But if I keep all the covers off I get cold. It's like being boiling on the inside and cold on the outside. I know a lot of you have experienced this so is there anything I can do to help it? Maybe a certain material of bedding or alternative remedy? I'm so shattered and every morning feels like I've had a night on the tiles, it's so grim!

Thanks in advance

I used to get this a lot.  My method was to:

1.  Wear a decent cotton night dress with strappy top.  It needs to be thick enough to be absorbent with enough exposed for cooling off when you need to stick bits outside the covers.

2.  Heat the room to a consistent temperature and use a light comfortable duvet.  Our room was always 16C in the winter, with a 10 tog microfiber duvet.  You don't really want a very cold room and a very thick duvet because you will be flipping from being too hot to too cold and since your temperature control is muddled, it does not help.  I used to start off too cold (I always have cold extremities), bury myself in the duvet, and wake in a puddle.  I found it better to be comfortably warm to start with, then cool down gradually as I fell asleep.

Now, I still prefer a lighter duvet with a woolly blanket over the bottom for my feet, which I can pull up or throw off.  Some people like wool duvets but I found them too expensive and it would have needed frequent laundering at the laundry.  I could fit my summer duvet (4 tog) in my own washing machine, so used this with blankets for a while.  I soaked so much bedding, I liked to be able to wash it all - it got clammy otherwise.

3.  Glass of water by the bed.  A good way to cool your core temp, and to make up for the sweat lost - if you lose too much, you stop sweating, so cannot cool off so easily.

4.  Relaxation exercises.  If you move around, your core temp rises and stops you sleeping and this becomes a vicious circle.

5.  Sleep on a towel, and always have a clean nighty to hand so you can wipe yourself down and put the dry one on with minimal effort, in the hope of getting back to sleep  :-\  I have many times had to get back into a wet bed in the hope of not disturbing my husband who is a dreadful sleeper and the dry stuff helps take the edge off it  :o

I usually turn my duvet over in the middle of the night when I wake up too hot (not practical if you share I suppose!). Think the chillow pillow gets a good press. My room's really cool (cold really) which helps and I keep a fan next to my bed.

Taking sage seems to make a difference for some people too.

I've used frozen hot water bottles when weather scorching hot. One under my feet and another on my pillow - bliss  ;D

I have fan beside bed, for quick cooling. Chillow for when things get bad. It's my legs which get hot. Not to touch, but like my blood is boiling. Horrid feeling for sure. Currently on top of bed. 4.5 tog duvet in winter, 1.5 in summer. Nobody told us about all this!!!

I definitely used to swear by magicool spray, really cooling and soothing.  At my worst we slept apart as Mr babyjane is a cold mortal but it is all much better now, down to about twice a week of waking up and throwing back my half of the duvet.  It does end but horrible at the time for however long it lasts.  I will never forget the feeling.
