Hi 56 with Osteoporosis
« on: December 06, 2016, 05:05:26 PM »

Planning to use HRT for a few years to hopefully strengthen my bones rather than drug treatment specific to Osteoporosis.
Has anyone else been down this road?

Hi AHG and welcome to MM
I assume you are post meno? I also assume you have been given advice about diet and exercise to help support your bones and reduce further density loss? Weight baring exercise with plenty of calcium, Vitamin D and magnesium is going to be vital alongside HRT.
HRT is probably your best option as I believe 5 years of HRT in our 50s can protect the bones for the longer term.  If you already have osteoporosis then HRT is certainly going to help.
Do read up all the info on this site to get clued up.  Finding the HRT that suits you can be trial and error and I would advice you start with sequential HRT (this would give a monthly bleed) -  many women choose to use a sequential version of HRT as progesterone taken every day can sometimes bring more adverse side effects - if you find a particular progesterone does suit you then you can move to a non bleed continuous HRT.  I would also suggest you try a HRT that has a kinder progesterone e.g. Femoston 2/10.  You will read a lot of posts here on MM about women having problems with HRT - do remember many of these women are in the minority when it comes to HRT side effects, so it is important not to expect side effects and to give the HRT at least 3 months to settle.
Do look under TREATMENTS at the top of this page to see your options.
Do keep us posted about your progress.  DG x

:welcomemm: do have a look at the osteoporosis site too.  Brisk walking can stave off symptoms: 10 mins. 3-4 times a week to begin with.  Also eat a good diet including dairy ……..

Hi AHG

 :welcomemm: from me too.

There is also brief information on this website:
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/osteoporosis.php
Other tabs if you go to HEALTH/Osteoporosis - there are also risk factors, diagnosis and treatment tabs.

You haven't said how old you are and where in menopause?

The younger you are the higher dose you will need and depending as Dancinggirl says, whether or not you are post-menopausal. Medium doses are licensed for oesteoporosis - some 1 mg tablet treatments, all 2 mg treatments and 50 mcg patch as well as at least 2 pumps gel.

I have been prescribed Elleste Duet 2mg.
I am 6 years into menopause aged 56, no other symptoms.
I am tall and slim BMI 19.5.
Bone scan after discussing my posture with GP showed spine -3.3. Two specialists I have seen say you can't remediate that through weight bearing and diet. Though I am attending to those too.
Thank you for your responses!

Elleste Duet 2mg will be a good dose - is this the sequential or continuous version?  Do let us know how you get on with this type of HRT - it is a good one to try and is popular, as it suits many women very well. Read the instructions as you need to be prepared for some slight side effects in the early weeks that usually settle. Some bleeding is normal in the first few months as well so don't panic if that happens.
I have a friend who was also diagnosed with advanced osteoporosis at your age - she fell down and broke her sacrum just before she was about to have surgery for breast cancer.  She is also tall and slim with an excellent diet and had sailed though her menopause so hadn't needed HRT. Sadly she cannot have HRT now because of her cancer so is having alternative treatment which is going OK but has some nasty side effects and none of the benefits that HRT can bring.
It's good to hear that your doctors are prescribing HRT as a front line treatment - HRT will also protect your heart for the long term and help prevent the onset of urogenital atrophy problems. You have a great deal to gain from HRT. Good luck.  DG x

It is the continuous Elleste.
My dilemma now is that I recall having investigations for an ovarian cyst following a slight bleed a year after my periods had stopped. On the second ultrasound they couldn't find anything. Also my Mum's sister had ovarian cancer.
Perhaps I need to go back and talk to my GP again.
Fundamentally I don't want to take anything for the Osteoporosis as I feel well!
Thank you again for your responses.

I agree with Stella, you may indeed feel well,  but osteoporosis will be doing its damage. My mother in law was crippled by it from her early sixties and had many admissions to hospital and long stays to fix broken bones.

AHG - you may feel well but you had 2 specialists telling you they were very concerned about your bones and that diet and exercise weren't going to restore things.  At 56 it is vital to try to stem to the further decline in your bones. You really don't want the devastating effects of osteoporosis, so some treatment is a good idea.
I believe the risk of ovarian cancer is very small with HRT and you have had investigations which show the cyst you did have has disappeared. It is worth discussing the family link with a specialist - a GP will not necessarily know what your risks are and may air on the side of caution and advice not to use HRT - GPs tend to be very wary of HRT I'm afraid and rarely recognise the benefits.  I don't believe Cysts necessarily mean you will be more prone to ovarian cancer.
All treatments have risks and side effects but HRT does bring many benefits as it is HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY, not a drug, so, to some degree it infuses the body with hormones that make our body function as it did in our reproductive years and, for our bones, oestrogen improves and maintains bone density.
BTW you still need to get enough calcium, VitaminD and magnesium regardless of what your doctors say.  Sunshine is the best way of getting vitamin D so in winter you do need a supplement - my brother-in-law is a leading gastroenterologist and insists we all take Vit D in winter.
I think the point is, you possibly need to try the HRT for a few months - hopefully the Elleste will suit you and you won't need to experiment with different HRT types.  After 6-12 months they will hopefully suggest another DEXA scan to look at how your bones are doing - is the HRT helping enough or do you need extra treatment.
I mentioned what my friend is going through, at the same age as you -  a simple slip and fall on her bottom put her in a wheelchair for some weeks - she wouldn't want anyone to go through that.

My maternal grandmother died from ovarian cancer and my doctor was not worried about that when I was prescribed HRT.
Medics are more worried about first degree relatives and an aunt isn't one. They would be concerned if there were several  family members with cancer.

I have decided to take the Elleste every other day for two weeks then assuming I am coping I will take the 2mg daily. I see my GP again at the end of January.
The specialists emphasised vitamin D rather than calcium as you say Dancinggirl. My levels are good but I am taking a supplement.
Thank you.

AHG - you can try taking the Elleste every other day but it could give fluctuations so perhaps not then best idea.
It takes 2-3 months for the body to adjust and settle on any HRT  - good luck - go into all this with a positive frame of mind and think of all the good things the oestrogen will do for you.  Keep us posted.  DG x

Please don't completely rule out treatments for osteoporosis should you need them.

My husband has osteoporosis, diagnosed at 47, as do his brothers and our eldest son, there is a strong genetic link from my mother in law who sounds similar to how Tinkerbell has described her MIL.

Obviously the men don't have the option of HRT and my husband would have broken bones by now if he did not take the biphosphonates.  He has an excellent consultant who also sees our son (who is only in his mid 30s!)

HNY
Been on Elleste for a month now. Changes I have observed-my nipples are tender, I seem to be less achy in general and my sex drive is a little higher.
Hoping with continued extra weight bearing exercise, vitamin D, magnesium and calcium my bones will be getting stronger and that the rest of my body is doing ok on it!

Pleased to hear it's going well AHG - let's hope this continues.  Some side effects e.g. sore nipples, are quite common and should settle in time. Good luck  DG x
