Pain Control Clinic?
« on: December 02, 2016, 10:02:48 AM »

What can be expected from going to a Pain Control Clinic?

I have been off work for over a year now with "unexplained hand/arm pain" & have had various painkillers, including co codamol. Pregabalin. I have been on Gabapentin now (3 x 100mg per day) for about 4 months.

The Gabapentin takes the edge off but it is nowhere near enough for me to do my job. If I take a higher dose of Gabapentin I am spaced out & have no control over things - & believe me when I say I am a control freak & like to have choices!!!

There is now talk of referring me to a PCC but I'm not sure what it will be like - is it all about mind over matter?, discussion of various relaxation techniques? or physio/hands on? I can't seem to find much about it on the internet so was wondering of asking about it on here. Has anyone had any experience?

Cazikins x

Sorry you are still in a lot of pain, Cazikins.
I haven't had any experience of a PCC, however I am sure I've seen that they use TENS machines, acupuncture and other treatments, so it isn't just hypnotherapy or relaxation. Also they may be some very gentle exercises that they can suggest. I've had some acupuncture on my lower back recently along with massage there has been some improvement.
There was a clinic at the hospital where I used to work I've just looked it up and as well as TENS they also mention neuro modulation ( whatever that is). They give 2 links Action on Pain and the British Pain Society Flutterbyx

I'm really sorry to read about your struggle Cazikins. I haven't experience of using a PCC but it has been discussed on my journey. As far as I'm aware experienced health care professionals operate a service covering a wide range of disciplines; psychological, physical and practical. Therefore they will further investigate your problem and identify and provide relevant treatment which may be of value.

I've read a number of studies about using neuromodulation to treat pain (using electricity and devices) as mentioned by flutterby. I presume these sorts of specialists would be au fait with all current pain treatments. Give it a go, grasp any chance to improve how grim you're feeling!

I really wish you success with it, you must be beside yourself not knowing what the heck is causing this. x

Yes thanks CLKD, but the link you sent wasn't anything to do with a Pain Control Clinic  ??? ???

Thankyou Flutterby & Englishrose, that has given me a bit more of an idea of what to expect. So long as I don't have to travel miles to get to the appointment I will give it a go. My GP is phoning me next week to talk about it. Hopefully I will get a diagnosis soon.

I had to have a head MRI scan this morning, blooming neck & shoulders hurt now  >:( >:( so just had some paracetamol.

Love Cazikins. xx

I have spoken to my GP & he is referring me to a PCC (locally), just got to wait for the appointment to come through now.

He is also referring me to another neurologist at a different hospital - I think it is one that specialises more in neuro conditions.
