Really struggling
« on: September 26, 2016, 02:12:25 AM »

Im 51 & I'm really struggling at the moment with hot flushes, night sweats, panic attacks, weepy episodes  and feeling dizzy. I started oral HRT 2 weeks ago and for the first week tolerated it well, then started feeling really sick - was throwing up and then experiencing extreme nausea (morning sickness type symptoms) and wasn't sure if it was the HRT or a virus so my doctor said to come off it. That was 4 days ago & the nausea/sickness have gone away but all the other symptoms have returned. I'm seeing my doctor again tomorrow and feeling really worried about my work- I was off work (self certified) last week and the way I'm feeling I don't think I can cope with being at work.

Hello Elphie. Welcome! Your symptoms sound like many of us on the forum. I don't know much about oral hrt, but I wonder if you should have been started on a lower dose. The common advice is to start low and slowly build up if needed until you feel stable and relieved of symptoms. Alternatively, since it's possibly causing your nausea, perhaps you should ask to try a transdermal type as in patches or gel so that it isn't going in your tummy. As for your initial symptoms, several months on hrt has helped me tremendously with all of those. I do hope your doctor can help you find something that works for you. Keep us posted!

Hi Elphi, it seems to be the difficult stage, it might take us a while to find our real balance and as lizab says try something that doesn't go in your stomach. There is loads of information on here and very wise ladies who have gone/are going through the same and help a lot. Tell your doctor how you feel and your worries about being able to work he/she might consider a sick note in your case while you are adjusting to the new treatment.
Hope it goes well today at the doctors.

Thanks for your posts and kind advice. I'm just back from the doctor's and I've been given a sick line for a week and HRT patches. I'm feeling a lot calmer knowing that I have another week at home and hopefully the flushes and night sweats will get better so I can start sleeping through the night again. My body has felt so out of control and it's been really tough. I'm lucky in that my husband has been really supportive.
Can people give me advice re what has helped them to feel stronger mentally? I like walking, swimming and do Tai Chi but haven't been doing much of any of these recently.

Exercise does seem to help if you're up to it. I can't tell from your posts how desperate you feel, but if it's really bad, you may have to give in to it and take it easy for awhile. I know that's not what you want to hear. I think it was Dancinggirl that told me that when I was feeling really bad several months ago, and it turned out she was right. The more I fought and tried to stay ahead of this, the worse I felt. Let your husband and friends care for you. If you have a friend or two you can confide in, let them know what's going on and let them help you with shopping, cleaning, etc if you're having trouble handling it all. It does take some time to get settled on the hrt, so don't expect everything to be back to normal overnight. Some ladies are lucky and do get back on track almost immediately. I hope you are one of the lucky ones! But if it takes a little time, know that it will improve shortly, even if it feels like it's taking too long.

Hi Elphie

 :welcomemm:

Sorry to hear you are feeling rough. Where are you in menopause ie what have your periods/cycle been doing over the past few months before you started HRT? Have you skipped many and are they very infrequent?

I agree that transdermal HRT is much better if you have sickness and nausea problems. Which one have you been given?

Yes I find exercise is the best thing to make me feel better generally - and walking in the open air/countryside. I go to 3 exercise classes per week during term-time.  Also listening to music, and going out to live music gigs when I can (not as often as I would like!) - I find makes me feel alive (as does the country walking!). Losing weight has also made me feel better even though I didn't have much to lose (have put a little back on again!) because I feel lighter and less tired after exercise.

Hope you feel better soon.
