Why do I have to come if HRT if I don't want to ?
« on: February 08, 2016, 12:17:21 PM »

After being Ellese solo 2 mg for 7 years following a hysterectomy I was told that was it no more. I was weaned of with a 3 month supply of the 1 mg and that was to be it. 9 months later I have visibllly aged my hair has thinned out. I am moody and lack concentration due to lack of sleep through appalling night sweats. The joints in my fingers have suddenly started to size up. I have to go get pesseries from my doctor when I want sex ::) lubricants alone having no affect. This is ludicrous. I am allowed the choice to smoke but not to buy a packet of HRT over the counter, or even insist that I be prescribed it, as I don't really understand the long term implications. Yeah because I am not capable of taking care of my families and my own health and well being after all these years of coping. I am 54. This is ridiculous and things should change. Rant over thanks for persevering this far. I'd be interested in hearing any comments. Thank you

JoanneC      If you have had a hyster then there should be no real reason why you should stop using oestrogen - provided there are no health problems that would prevent this.  If you did smoke however then this will greatly increase your risk of developing breast cancer and your doctor may be concerned that the HRT would increase that risk.
If you don't smoke and have a good diet and exercise regime then staying on HRT will actually be very beneficial throughout your 50s and beyond. I would ask for a referral for specialist advice - I'm not surprised you are angry - I am 60, slim and a non smoker and if I had had a hyster I certainly wouldn't want to stop HRT.
Do look up the new NICE guidelines - they are on this site somewhere - if necessary show these to your GP - who should have read them!!!!!
Do get some Vagifem local oestrogen in the mean time to help with the vaginal atrophy - this could be used for life and may be necessary even with systemic oestrogen.   DG x

Hi Joanne C

 :welcomemm:

I agree with everything Dancinggirl said - no need to stop HRT but if you smoke it would be a good idea to think about giving up....

Joanne - You shouldn't have to stop HRT.
The NICE guidelines are somewhere in the link below

Thank you for all your replies. I will be returning to my GP with my NICE guidelines and a request for a consultation with a menopause specialist. I will also pass this advice on to my friend who is undergoing the same concerns.  I will keep this thread updated. Thanks again for your good advice. xxx

I recently restarted Estradot 25 having tried to come completely, as old guidelines said no older than 60. I turn 60 in a few months. I was ready to do battle with my GP. However, he surprised me by saying I could use it if it meant  a better quality of life. Only  proviso being if BP goes through the roof or I develop heart problems.

Fingers crossed for you Joanne.

Just wanted to give an update on the HRT situation. After going for various blood test and 3 appointments at my GP's I now have my Ellsesse solo 1mg reinstated 😐 Only a 3 month prescription but I am also awaiting an appointment to see a menopause specialist at my local Women's Hospital. So I have had to jump some hoops but armed with a thorough health check undertaken which all came back fine, and a copy of the NICE guidelines and continually stressing the phrase "quality of life" I finally won through, for now 😀
Every case should be treated on an individual basis and my GP's surgery should have  complied with my request in the first place. I have been at this practice for over 23 years. This last 9 months have been horrendous and all because they had decided 7 years and that's your limit. I have felt like my life has fallen apart and the GPs response was get on with it, although I'm sure I could have easily got some anti deppresents of them !🤔. As if I was not fed up enough 😂
Maybe anti depressants cost less to prescribe than HRT🤔 Anyway back on board. Anyone else struggling to get back on , and it is your CHOICE, don't be deterred .
And thanks to the ladies who took time out to reply. They made a difference. We are all entitled to a good "quality of life", regardless of our age or sex. It's a joke really in this day and age that this is even an issue. We should be advised in regard to when and if it would be advisable to come off HRT, and made aware of all the pros and cons for and against. It is our CHOICE, and until I read these boards I did not think I had one. I had never questioned my GP before.
I am not stating its any wonder drug here, I just felt a lot better when I was on it and they were wrong to take me off.😐
But least I'm back on it now 😀

Thank you

Joanne

Hey Joanne C

Great news!!!!! That's the spirit! the more of us who are well-informed and challenge decision made on the basis of out of date information - the more women will be helped!

Sadly not everyone feels up to this but if not, hopefully try to take someone along who can give support.

So pleased for you and hope you feel better soon :)
