Oh dear - I posted on Health Anxiety posting that I was staying away for a week, but have gone to GP again about piles.   My regular GP this time - she is bit brusque and impatient.  She looked saying she wouldn't actually examine, but then having looked she did examine and asked me about shrinkage since my last visit as it should have shrunk more.   Anyway - long story short and all that - I am on holiday soon until mid October so she said come back after then as if it isn't pile it is polyp.  I totally freaked then but she didn't give any further information except to say that if it had already shrunk then it is a pile.

I have now convinced myself it hasn't shrunk at all and is therefore a polyp.  Have googled and am in mad panic about bowel/rectal cancer.    Help as feel totally pathetic and don't think I can wait a month to find out!

So what if its a polyp, my 24 yr old daughter had one, they removed it there and then with cauterising, not all polyps are cancerous they take yrs and yrs to develop and good thing if it is and you have caught it now they can remove very easily, relax, piles do get huge I have 2 that are external and have not shrunk in over 30 yrs!

Thanks ladies - glad I popped back on and got your words of wisdom.

Mine doesn't hurt - it just itches, which does make me think it is piles, or swollen veins.   I also think polyps aren't red, I somehow think they look more 'skin-like'.

No advice at all.   Just told me that piles are re-absorbed in the body, leaving a small skin tag.  If it shrinks it is a pile.    I don't like her at all, she has no bedside manner.    Whilst I have got major HA, she makes me feel silly but then panics me.  When I went twice with bladder pain she said 'we better do tests to check for ovarian cancer' then just left me to worry myself sick for three weeks until tests came back.    So I assuming that this 'polyps' comment comes from a similar lack of empathy.    Although I had worried that it hadn't shrunk at all.

But, my googling session did no good - everything on there is bad news!   As Cassie says, polyps aren't usually an issue anyway.  Am trying to calm down!!

Bloody thing still here.   It is about the size of a pea and a reddish purple colour.   I use ice e dry day but ca't avoid sitting for long periods due to work.  Should it have gone by now?  I think it probably started in about May with itching but I only noticed it about four weeks ago.

I am going away for over two weeks at end of next week and GP said to go back after then if it hadn't gone.

Any further advice?    Do some piles just stay forever?   I figure there must be some that do, otherwise nobody would need operations??

I honestly don't think they ever go away fully. I have had mine off and on since my daughter was born and she is nearly 21  ::)

They shrink and become less troublesome but basically they are always there lurking and waiting to pop out and hurt again.

Does sound as if it's shrunk a bit though.

I know when mine visit they are there for weeks.

mine appeared 35 years ago but became permanent residents about 18 months ago.  they are always there to a greater or lesser degree and depend on how easily I go to the toilet.

I was also advised some time ago when I had a colonoscopy that stress will cause them to flare up.

Stress is very much a factor in this - certainly for me.

Stress never really has had an effect on my guest.
Lifting things that are too heavy and being on my feet too long are the triggers for me.

They say constipation is the big no no....I have never been constipated but have IBS D...That's a big trigger too.

I swear by tea tree oil baths and when I do get to sit down I put my feet up....

I read somewhere that a reason for problems with hemmorhoids in menopause was the increase of varicose veins. Same principle in both, they said. It made sense to me. My hemmorhoid(s) are internal and I've had problems the last year or so. Am 46 years okd. I've been looked at by two doctors - one a GI specialist - and remnants of a hemmorhoid was found. I feel like I'm healing more and more, but that the area is still very sensitive and easily "disturbed". Maybe due to problems in general with mucus membranes in peri/menopause?

That's a good point about varicose veins - albeit a little depressing!

Am just going to try and put them to the back [or bottom?!] of my mind and get on with life.  I am really aware that I do far too much fussing/stressing/worrying and complaining!

Thanks all!  Any more suggestions gratefully received!
