back pain help
« on: March 08, 2015, 11:44:20 AM »

hi all, some of you may remember me having back problems for the last 2 years, ive had scans, x rays and all i have been told is i have a couple of worn discs lower back, well its not getting any better iam waiting to see an orthopedic surgeon, which is what the pain clinic refereed me to, however that was 1 year ago, with numerous phone calls the hospital tell me that iam on their list but no appointments yet
So 3 nights ago i tried taking 1 cocodamol 15mg at bedtime and yesterday i felt as if i was on another planet soo dizzy and just wanted to be sick, never ate all day, this happened when i tried to take them before
I have also been given gabapentin but when i tried those i just couldnt keep my eyes open, iam so bad with tablets. so thats the end of those cant cope if my head is not straight all i am falling asleep, theres no point in taking them.
Anyone any views on exercise as in gentle stretching, i had physio and then was given exercises to do, did then 3 times a day and they didnt seem to help tried them for a month.
I cannot stand for long and walking after about 10 mins the burning pain is terrible and i just have sit
Any views would be appreciated    kerrie

Nothing worse than back pain.  For severe ovarian pain I was given Tramadol, which helped with the pain. It might help your back, but it may make you woozy. I used to take at teatime, so that I'd sleep off the worst of the effects.

Osteopath may help, but they might need to see xrays first. An old work colleague of mine suffered terribly for years with back pain. Tried everything available, osteopath, chiropractor, acupuncture. Eventually got an operation. They effectively placed a cushion between two discs in her lower back. She still has back pain, though not quite as severe.

Another suggestion might be Pilate's.

You should NOT have had to wait for a year to see an Orthopaedic Surgeon!  Get your GP to write a letter as a matter of urgency? and ring the appts desk and tell them if you are able to take a cancellation appt.

What medication did the Pain Clinic suggest?  No wonder you felt sick!  Co-codamol has me on the floor after 3 tablets, sorts the pain but makes me really ill.  I use Nurofen - 2 tablets followed by another 90 mins. later, then 2 more depending on pain 1 hour later.  Then every 4 hours.

Give your GP a ring tomorrow!

no i dont thinks so either, i saw my gp on friday told him it was getting ridiculous so he wrote a note for the receptionist to ring them, within an hour she rang me back and said that she spoke to the hospital and that they are aware of my case and that they still dont have an appointment to offer me and that they would write to me as soon as they do.
when i spoke to the gp i told him i just wanted to know what was the cause of the pain, he said that in his opinion after looking at xrays its degeneration of discs in lower back with is causing nerve pain in the hips when walking or standing.
He offered me gabapenten sp?  which i tried before and they just knocked me off my feet and i dont see the point of that, thats why i was asking about exercise.
I cant take anti inflammations due to high blood pressure and stomach problems.

Normal wear and tear then.  You probably need physiotherapy to build up muscles; to be taught how to stand, do the ironing, bend etc.; we get into bad habits and also, such pain can cause compensation in posture = pain ……..

I find it incredible that you are having to wait 12 months, find it hard to believe actually - also, patients have the opportunities of going to the hospital of choice so did the Receptionist ring round the closest you can travel to.  I can see why people fetch up in A&E!

i find it incredibly hard to believe clkd, i told them that i was able to take a cancellation and they noted that.
there was a choice of 2 hospitals but was told that i should go for the 1 where i see the pain management and scan, as apparently, so they tell me not all hospitals can view the scan

I don't believe that either in this day of everything being on line.  I would be ringing the X-ray Dept. to find out!

i did ring months ago and was told that different authorities use different systems and that where we live is not in the same area as where i had my scan so it was not possible for them to access it, unbelievable i know i thought you could access anything these days if you had the right information

Exercise is definitely the way! After my back was diagnosed - lower discs eroding, osyophytes(sp?) and general wear and tear our physio held a back pain clinic that I was eligible to attend.  The old way of resting it is long gone, now they advocate exercise all the way, even for slipped discs!  I did all the exercises they gave me everyday and after a month or so felt able to join a local Pilates class which actually uses a lot of the physio exercises as part of the class.  I've been doing it for over two years now and it has made so much difference - to the point that yesterday I was able to take part in my nephews LaserQuest game in a nearby forest - great fun although I do ache a bit today ::)
