54 ! Sailing through the menopause and then BANG!!
« on: November 11, 2014, 11:29:31 AM »

Hello to everyone,

What a brilliant Forum and I so wish I had known of it sooner :) but then I didn't really need to google Menopause problems as I have said in my title Sailing through the Menopause, it was a doddle ;D and then Bang. Gee whiz I didn't know what hit me.... I started heavy bleeding around about 47 ish but I persevered and then when I was 49 I started the hot flushes and usually only through the day, never at nights, I could have up to 20 flushes a day easily , these would leave me very tired but a good nights sleep and I was ok for the next day.. so far so good.. the flushes wore down to maybe 5 or 6 a week, my periods stopped when I was 50(2010) and have had no periods since, so far so good! I was really quite smug with myself and thought I am so lucky to go through this so easily and then when I was about 53 I started to have the night sweats , these are a pain in the b*** and since I turned 54 in March this year all has gone downhill. First thing to happen was a mini stroke , I have recovered from this but at the time was left extremely tired and still am but what has got me worried most of all is the low mood that I have! I have absolutely no interest in anything whatsoever and gave up a really good job as  I just couldn't cope with being around people anymore. For most of this summer I have shut myself away and the last 3 months were terrible and then at the weekend I started to feel my mood lifting so I am hoping for that to improve as the days go by,  My nights sweats are still awful  though ,Sheets soaking and have to change them  (Thank goodness i have a really good supporting partner) duvet off/duvet on/duvet off. :) I have so much more symptons now than ever before and after reading through the forum I can now see I am not going doolally ;D...Itchy feet being one? couldn't understand that one! now I know. Headaches and nausea I have been having more of this last month , The symptons change on a regular basis, I have never considered HRT until now , What are your thought/advice for me , I was hoping not to go down the HRT road , not for any reason just that until now I thought I was going to manage it myself but I really don't want another 6 months like I have just had.

Thankyou for listening to me moan!!

Hi, welcome, good to see you.  It all seems so much better when you share it here. Wait till you get some replies, you will feel so much better not to be on your own with it all.

I can't advise on HRT because I don't use it but you aren't going doolally any more than I am, or the rest of us, but you could perhaps use some help.

Glad you joined us  :welcomemm:

Have you thought that your partner could have a single duvet tucked in with blankets?  That way you can throw on/off all night with less disturbance?

Hi Liz196017

 :welcomemm: from me too.

How frustrating for you for symptoms to develop mainly once you are post-menopause.

The thing is we all experience the drop in oestrogen in different ways and at different stages. Some women unfortunately begin to get flushes and sweats even while thier periods are still regular. In these cases it can make it more difficult to get the balance right when using HRT because the hormonal cycle is likely to be very strong.

What happens once you've reach your last period, is that oestrogen levels continue to fall until they bottom out approx 2 years later ( I presume the exact time is variable between women). It is at this point that symptoms can worsen, or, if you have come off lightly during peri-menopause they may become apparent for the first time. At this time women on HRT sometimes find they need to increase their dose to get the same effect, and some start for the first time.

The fact that you have had a mini-stroke may make things a bit difficult though and I would definitely ask to be referred to a menopause clinic if possible so that you can see a specialist gynae (not a nurse) as recommended below, and they can advise on whether this will be possible knowing your medical history.

This is what it says on this site about stroke:

The incidence of stroke increases in women after the menopause and an association between a protective effect of ovarian hormones estrogen and progesterone has been suggested. Similarly, it was thought that the use of HRT reduced the risk of stroke. Although some studies have shown a protective effect, others, including the Women's Health Initiative trial, have shown a small increase in risk of stroke in those women taking HRT. It has been concluded that HRT should not be used for either primary or secondary prevention of stroke. If a woman has had a stroke and is considering treatment for menopausal symptoms, non-hormonal options should be tried first and HRT should only be considered after full discussion with a specialist.

There is also some info on thrombosis:

Since HRT is associated with a small increased risk of venous thrombosis, care must be taken when considering HRT use in women with a past or family history of thrombosis. Depending on the indication for HRT and on the cause of the thrombosis, risks and benefits should be assessed. If HRT is to be used, preference would usually be given to the transdermal route (patch or gel) [ref 22]. Specialist advice should be requested. Vaginal estrogen may be used for treatment of vaginal and bladder symptoms.

There is no doubt that the right HRT will eliminate most of the sweats and flushes and should improve your mood.

The disadvantage is that you will need a progestogen to protect your womb along with the oestrogen. As you are post-meno this would normally be given continuously to avoid a bleed (there can be spotting and some irregular bleeding to start with but this should settle evntually). The downside is that progestogens can cause undesirable side effects in some susceptible women -so instead of improving mood - headaches and anxiety begin or continue. To avoid this some women ( like myself) continue to have a cycle so I have a bleed every 6-8 weeks even though I am 61 - but I have no sweats, nor flushes, and rarely suffer low mood.

Here is the page to see if there is a menopause clinic near you

I hope this has given you some food for thought and do continue to ask questions and we can try to help!

Thankyou for the suggestions, the duvet one I will def try, :) Hurdity, I did wonder about the TIA if it was connected to the Meno but no doctor either at the Hospital or my own has mentioned it, after reading through some topics I have been thinking I should ask to be referred to a Meno Clinic.
Today I have a thick fuzzy head and nausea again, wish it would help me not to eat as much with the thickening waist that I now have :(... God its not easy being a woman is it?

It was CLKD that gave the duvet suggestion Liz - I can't claim credit for that!

I had several months of insomnia last year and I sincerely sympathise with anyone suffering with it.  It is the most miserable thing and affects everything you do.

Hi , thank you for your post. That was the first time I read something that I could really relate to. I am in a pressured career and am signed off at the moment for "depressive illness" but basically my mood has been low since february. I have been barking and snapping at my family and my boss and crying at work. All very disconcerting. Thanks again for your honesty.

Hi Liz
Not much more I can add, other than you are not alone. I am one of the many who suffer symptoms similar to you and am struggling to cope at work. The nausea and migraines are horrid, as is the whole random 'what next?!!!' nature of all this (I am only 42 so a while to go yet). What has helped, apart from the amazing support of people on here, is starting HRT. My mood has certainly improved - getting a little of my old va va voom back (though it will still do a reverse turn if it fancies it!). I think  - though perhaps too early to tell- the weird sensations on my skin and nausea/headaches are easing too. Can't say they have gone, but now I am 6 weeks in, they are much less frequent.
Take care and good luck, B x
