It's not Christmas yet!
« on: November 07, 2014, 10:25:28 PM »

Why are there Christmas adverts on telly now?  It's not Christmas yet.  It isn't even Advent.  It really annoys and saddens me that the real meaning of Christmas is being overlooked, in favour of greedy commercialism.   I know this happens every year, but it shouldn't.  Even the word is being dumbed down - the "Festive Season", for goodness' sake!    The festival is Christmas, and as with all festivals, it's a celebration.  And we need to remember what it is we're celebrating.  Not nothing, that's for sure!!

Well said.

It gets earlier every year and must be so hard for people with young children.

I do like Christmas.....in December  ::)

Just under six weeks to go. We are well into practising for the Nativity Play in school so to me it seems that Christmas is very near - still so many words to learn and costumes to get right.

I used to love preparing for the school nativity when I used to teach young children and now I am practicing carols with the choir I'm in. I do not go to church, but I do have my own spiritual beliefs. Christmas for me is having those I love around me. It is not about spending loads of money that we can't afford. We don't over indulge on food. We have created our own traditions. The shops have to survive in this difficult financial situation; some don't. I don't like all the commercialism, but I don't let it annoy me.

I'm cutting back on money spent on presents this year, managed to find a good few in sales which is a bonus.

Nativity at my last nursery was always performed on a Sunday afternoon, as it was church based. It's a lot of hard work, but it was worth it. Never could get through Away in  a Manger without wet eyes.

I've decided not to send cards this year - I think a lot of people are of the same mind as the number I receive has dwindled in the last few years from thirty-ish to around eight. Stamps and cards are so expensive and at the end of the day, for me anyway, it's just another chore to which I roll my eyes and think 'better get on with it'. My son says he only sends cards to 'old' people - I told him I'd better not get one off him this year then!  ;D

Our Nativity is performed in our local church CG but during the week - it makes for a magical afternoon with all the tealights twinkling on the window sills.

Small children + nativity= tears  ::)

Can't even blame meno as I've been like this for years.

I've done a bit of shopping already. The weeks just fly past and then before you know it you are eating turkey.

Hubbies has been bought and sorted mine this morning. Kids are a work in progress.

Daughter & partner want cash to put towards a holiday, which they hope to take in the spring.

Son & GF don't know what they want, I've offered cash/vouchers. They're going to Florida in the spring.

Grandchildren's all bought. Hubby's part bought. Small presents to open on the day, bought.

I'm making my list, checking it twice.  ;D

I stopped buying christmas presents years ago, it all got too stupid and meaningless. I only send four or five cards now, and they only go to people I rarely see.

OH and I exchange token presents, and we each have a strict budget of £10. His birthday is in November so I spend a lot on that instead of Christmas.

He buys presents for his immediate family and we split the cost, because they insist on sending me gifts. It's lazy on my part, I know, but it's his family, not mine!

Just before Christmas I donate the cash I would have spent on presents to one or two of my favourite charities.
