Thank you silverlady, what an interesting piece of research. Having seen the effects of statins on my DH I will be encouraging the 'apple a day'. To be fair his cholesterol is high due to familial reasons and not diet related but every little helps in keeping the dose of statin as low as possible which can only be a good thing.

I too would agree with the idea that we need to control our own health and are responsible for keeping ourselves as healthy as possible by using common sense about diet, exercise, lifestyle etc. However I do think that the fact that gp appointments now constitute a 10 minute chat, and in some areas even that is fraught with difficutly,  does not encourage a two way relationship between doctor and patient. That said I do think it is true that we tend to expect doctors to be able to solve our problems with pills, certainly my grandchildren have had more doctors visits than my own children ever did. The first sign of a sniffle off they go whereas a dose of 'vick',a hot milky drink and a cuddle would have been my first response!! Thanks for the link Silverlady it made interesting reading

Health benefits of flaxseed, second to none for heart health

http://whfoods.org/genpage.php'tname=foodspice&dbid=81

I mix 150g flax seed, 25g melted butter, 2 eggs, beaten, 1 teaspoon bi-carb soda  together, put in cupcake cases and cook in oven

They take the place of bread and are fantastic for keeping you regular, and no carbs! you can eat them with anything.
