Who Uses HRT
« on: January 16, 2014, 11:39:34 AM »

Hiya

I am considering HRT to help with hot flushes and pounding racing heart during the night.  Not every night, just every now and then.

I am 53 and haven't had a period since Sept and to be honest that was just spotting.

If you are on HRT, which type are you taking and does it help?

Thanks so much for your help with this.

I have MS and I want to try to control the flushes so that they don't make my MS worse.

Have you browsed the menus, left of screen.  Also so a 'search' for MS, there are a few ladies here with symptoms.  Do you have a Practice Nurse with whom you could discuss the various options as well as an MS Support Nurse to speak with?

Hi Shazzie,

I have MS and have found that HRT (Evorel Conti Patches) have helped enormously with the MS, I have fewer problems with fatigue, balance and spasticity.

I had been on the contraceptive pill for years and the MS was manageable. My stopping the pill coincided which meno kicking in. 6 months after stopping the pill my MS worsened a lot, when I was able to get HRT and things improved greatly.

Here are a couple of links which discuss the impact of oestrogen on MS. Also, there is always the point that pregnant women with MS usually are very well during the pregnancy, but relapse when the baby is born.

Like CLKD says, contact your MS nurse for advice and general help, though my Neurologist and MS nurse were pretty undecided about the benefits of oestrogen. All I can say is HRT has helped me greatly.

Might also be worth looking at the MS Society website.

Hope you feel better.

Thanks CKLD and Limpy.

I am so grateful for your replies.  I am still finding my way round this site but will def look a the list on the left.

Thanks to you Limpy too and I am sorry you are suffering MS too.  I was d/x 9 years ago so am used to the symptoms of MS but the heat of the hot flushes are a real pain.  As you will know any heat can exacerbate the symptoms.

I will def mention to my  MS Nurse and Practice Nurse for advice.

Thanks again for your help.

I have read a lot about the Estriol and the treatment of MS

https://www.whitakerwellness.com/health-concerns/autoimmune-conditions/estriol-multiple-sclerosis/

http://www.overcomingmultiplesclerosis.org/Community/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3771

I think there are trials now with estriol and cognition associated with MS

I read in Dr John Lees "What the Doctors Don't tell you about Menopause" that it may help protect the myelin sheath.
