Periods back again and I am feeling so awful
« on: January 06, 2014, 10:25:21 AM »

Hi all,
I have been reading some of the posts and I'm sorry to read that some of you are having a difficult time.  The more I read the more I hate menopause.

As you know I was doing really well but my periods have started up again and I'm feeling terrible.  Three or four weeks before this last period I was very tense, very irritable and tearful and then came the period.  As usual it was heavy so I started taking the Northisterone that the doctor prescribed for me.  I don't like taking Northisterone as you know, but I went on holiday for Christmas and didn't want to bleed while I was there ...  Anyway the holiday was a complete wash-out as I didn't feel well at all.  I stopped the N because it was making me feel on edge and I started to bleed a couple of days later so I had to start it again.  Anyway fast forward to today -  I've been taking the N for two weeks and I'm getting hot and cold sweats, very depressed and anxious.  This morning at around 6am I felt awful and my chest was soaking wet.  I got up feeling sick, anxious, and sweating-- I am full of doom and gloom and I feel so unwell.  I am stopping the Northisterone today because it is not helping me -

I am 53 years old - when does this end?  I don't think I can go on like this for much longer and really feel I should look for long time solution but I'm in a dark place and can't think about that right now.  I also have a lot going on in my life right now which doesn't help.

I need someone to talk to - I feel so alone and scared :(

Sorry you are feeling so dreadful. Have you tried HRT - sorry I can't remember - as it sounds as if you are experiencing night sweats which HRT is usually quite good at improving.

As for the norethisterone - if you have built up a womb lining then this will need to be shed so I'm not sure why you don't want to bleed? I can appreciate that periods are not very easy to deal with and I can understand why you might have wanted to delay it for your holiday but now I would think it would be better to get the period out of the way.

Also norethisterone is notorious for giving you feelings of anxiety and depression so it could be that you will feel much better again once you stop. Has the doc offered you any other treatment for your heavy periods and how heavy are they?

Hi Taz,
I have a history of heavy bleeding so my doctor said to take the Northisterone on the third day of my period.  It just so happened that I was due to go away on holiday around that time.

I have fibroids which causes very heavy periods. She does not want me to go on HRT -  She said i would need  cyclical HRT and that would bring on a period unless I could have the Mirena IUD which I refused because I'd tried the Mirena a few years ago but the progestin made me really irritable and depressed.  She also said that if she prescribed HRT I would need progesterone because I still have my uterus and then she went on to say that if I've had symptoms of depression and irritability with the Mirena I would have the same symptoms with any progestin that she prescribed.  That is her reasoning I guess...

I took Northisterone for the first time a couple of years ago after I'd had a sever bleed.  I took it for 3 weeks and then stopped.  I didn't see another period after that for 10 months.  I honestly though my periods were over for good but I've been having problems again.

I'm hoping that after this latest dose of Northisterone my periods will calm down again.  If they don't I'm not sure I have many options left except to maybe go for an ablation.  This is something I don't want to do.  I was really hoping I could just last until menopause, but it looks like there is no end in sight.

Thank you so much for you post x

How about bioidentical HRT Oestrogel and Utrogestan? I am sensitive to progesterone but this HRT is just fab, I cannot take northesterone (spelt that wrongly) either its horrid but the Utrogestan is fine no side effect.

I too have fibroids but the bleeds on cyclical HRT were really small (after the initial three months) lasting only three days and not heavy either. It's not like a proper period - well mine weren't and I think that others have said the same.

I think your GP is wrong in saying that all progestins would have the same effect - especially if you use utrogestan. I had awful problems with norethisterone but not with other progesterones. Don't give up on looking for an answer.

Taz ~ Maybe my doctor is wrong not to prescribe HRT. I can't keep going on like this forever because I'm not coping anymore.  Youve given me some hope which I desperately need today!

Ellie ~ Did your GP prescribe those or did you have to see a private doctor?

Ladies, thank you so much for your advice!

You do sound like a candididate for a hysterectomy. I know its drastic but my friend had one and said that its the best thing that she ever did. Also major bleeding for weeks on end, she has never looked back. I do hope that things improve for you x

My GP I asked for them. Lots of us on here use Oestrogel or a patch and Utrogestan. I have to say though my GP is  a colleague of mine so I do not have the hassle a lot of women on here have.

We started an Oestrogel and Utrogestan support thread on the forum.

Thanks Cassie, but a hysterectomy is the last option for me.  I've had friends who have taken that route and regretted it.  I guess everyone is different - I would probably go for an ablation first .......  I'm glad the hysterectomy worked for your friend ---x

The fact is that the body is missing a hormone or has too much of a particular hormone. This needs to be replaced or levelled out.

Insist on seeing a gynecologist or a doctor specialising in menopause (preferably an older female doctor who also is in menopause stage herself). Well women clinics are in my opinion a waste of time regarding menopause. My doctor is on HRT herself and said she will stay on it until the day she dies.  ;D  She also said some HRT is good for women as it can protect the heart and bones.

If you lose a lot of blood this can also make you anemic (tired and sluggish) and you may need high doses of iron.

Google on the internet for the best doctor near you. Or if you can afford it go private. In the end paying for all those pills etc, one could have gone private and spoken to an expert.

I am on my 5th day of HRT tablets and I feel very good. Not sure how my period will be like as I am on an HRT that still has me have periods. I hope they will be OK.

If you have no joy with your doctor ask to see someone else.
