possible benefits of celery seed tablets?
« on: January 01, 2014, 01:48:01 PM »

Almost a year ago I put a question on here about the symptoms of aching feet, balls of feet and calves as a possible issue related to peri menopause. Quite a few people on this forum agreed with me and I have since found other similar discussions when googling. I am now further towards the menopause as I have not had a period for 6-7 months and my hot flushes have become more intense though not a serious problem.  Yesterday I found several references to celery seed tablets as on Google. People claimed to have had  fast relief from foot pain.  A bit of further research found that they are recognised as a benefit for rheumatism, arthritis and gout. They are apparently available from Holland & Barrett shops.
Has anyone tried them?

I like celery and I think I would prefer to eat it, we always have a stick to eat with a sandwich, in fact just bought some today.

Yes those are the links which I have seen. I do also eat celery sometimes, mainly in home made soup.

I have the symptoms you mention and they are worse on my patch change day.  I have not heard of celery seed helping this and will look into it.  Thanks for the info. ;)

I don't really like celery though.....wonder if you could just grind of some seeds and use like pepper?

One can buy celery seeds DH uses them somtimes.  But how many would one require to make any difference to symptoms?  I haven't read the Links, being a sceptic  ::)

No product can target pain in one area of the body like that ie in one part of the musculo/skeletal system, although a healthy diet can be of immeasurable benefit, and some supplements can benefit joints etc

I had a look at one of the links and the jury's out on the benefits ie inconclusive. However I seem to remember this is used as a herb, and many herbs and spices have health benefits - so no harm in adding it to your cooking repertoire, along with a variety of other herbs and spices. After all it is a straight plant product and hasn't been refined or manufactured into a miracle pill! I would try to find a supplier from a grocery type store rather than H & B who will probably sell minute amounts at a price for medicinal purposes rather than as a herb!

The best relief long term for menopause symptoms, is of course HRT if you feel your symptoms becoming bothersome, as this replaces the oestrogen your body is becoming deficient in.

I am usually sceptical about the values of such herbal treatments but just thought I would give it a try. Have bought some but too early to conclude anything. I still haven't raised the possibility of HRT with my GP practice. I was somewhat put off by a chance comment from one of the doctors. I had gone to see them about something unrelated but must have made a brief reference to menopause and HRT as the GP said that the practice didn't generally support HRT. My allocated time slot was over then so I didn't get a chance to ask for their reasons for this. I haven't brought it up with them again yet as I am not sure myself whether it would be a good idea to try it.

How long ago was this conversation?  Have a word with the Practice Nurse first! if they really do not support menopausal symptoms then it's time to change your GP.

It was a year or so ago. I did actually ask if i could make an appointment with a practice nurse. Both the nurses at my practice are over 50 while the doctors are either men or too young! However I was told that the nurses didn't offer appointments of this type. They only do specific tasks.

Well Woman Clinic then.  Our Nurses see us for whatever we ask, then if we need a referral to the GP they will suggest it.  But they do the smears, BP, some prescriptions.  I would ask again ……..

I tried all kinds of seeds, oils, herbs, the chinese doctors and their pills. All a waste of time and money.

The fact is that the body is missing a hormone or has too much of a particular hormone. This needs to be replaced or levelled out.

Insist on seeing a gynecologist or a doctor specialising in menopause (preferably an older female doctor who also is in menopause stage herself). Well women clinics are in my opinion a waste of time regarding menopause.

Google on the internet for the best doctor near you. Or if you can afford it go private. In the end paying for all those pills etc, one could have gone private and spoken to an expert.

My husband tried them for a while as they were recommended for his gout - didn't work!
