Weird sensation stopping me sleeping
« on: September 02, 2013, 08:46:05 PM »

Think I might have asked this before ::) but having a bad time at moment so here goes.
Every night when I go to bed as I start to drift off to sleep I get a sensation in my head that feels as if my head has fallen down a liftshaft. There is NO bodily movement - it is not a hypnic jerk. I usually get this sensation a couple of times then fall asleep but I can get episodes where it just won't stop and I cannot get any sleep.
All Drs look totally flummoxed and have come up with anything from a sleep disorder to anxiety to my bad neck to meno symptom. I have had it on and off for past 6 years.
If I get a physical symptom that scares me for example last night I woke at 3amand as I tuned over got bad vertigo for 20 mins and got into a right old panic about it well that will then trigger the weird sensations big time and it can be days before they settle down.
I have to resort to sleeping pills at times.
So can anyone relate to this really weird symptom or is it just another one of my weird symptoms?

It maybe BPPV http://www.patient.co.uk/health/Benign-Paroxysmal-Positional-Vertigo.htm

I could be lying in bed perfectly still and get a similar sensation, my BPPPV is in a quiet state at the moment but still get the sensation when turning over in bed sometimes.

I had all the tests even MRI and nothing was found wrong with ears.

You might get some answers on this forum

Thanks for that. I have got an appt with a neuro-otologist at specialist hospital as I also have symptoms of a rare ear disorder ( I can hear my eyeballs move and have had pulsitile tinnitus for past 6 years).
My Gp has said to mention this symptom at my appt in october as he did not include it in his letter to the neuro-otologist.
I cannot have the treatment for BPPV as I cannot have any sudden neck movement due to prolapsed neck disc and bad arthritis - typical!
It would be nice to know whats causing it as like the hearing your eyeballs move I feel such a freak as Drs just look as if they don't believe me. It was only after reading a newspaper article about a woman with same symptoms that I took it to my GP and he agreed I had exact same symptoms and GP said he had to admit he had never heard of anyone hearing their eyeballs move.

What kind of noise do they make ?
I did not even know they made a noise. Is it an ear or eye problem. I have tinnitus after an ear infection which drives me mad at times.

Noisey eye sockets - think this was in the Telegraph Monday Medical section - perhaps send an e-mail to the Dr - he has a 'can anyone help' section!

The back of my neck is noisy sometimes.  Also I get that sudden 'sensation', what with the electric zaps from the medication ....... "I'm in my own World, it's OK: they know me here"  ::)

If the room is quiet then everytime I move my eyes I hear a creaking sound in time with eye movement :o I have had this for about 12 years and stopped mentioning it to anyone other than my husband because I could tell they thought I was doolally. I am seeing the actual consultant surgeon who was named in the newpaper article about this rare ear disorder.  It said that peopel with this disorder often get labelled as having anxiety problems as no one believed them, it was only found out in 1998 I think that having holes in the bones of some part of your ear causes all these noise symptoms plus vertigo etc.  I ticked every box.

Will do. I am going to have to stay overnight in Manchester which is 2.5 hr drive away as its first thing in morning app ::) and finding huge hospital in manchester in rush hour :o so its going to be an expensive hospital appt!
I know I will have to have alot of tests so hoping that some or all can be done at local hospital or else arrange to have them done all in one day down there.
I don't like big places either!
