light bleeding for weeks after mirena coil insertion - why?
« on: October 25, 2011, 09:49:59 AM »

Does anyone know why you get light bleeding after mirena coil insertion? I've had it for nearly three weeks now and it seems to be the norm but wondered why.

Thanks

Hello Celine

To be honest I don't really know the reason.  I know that progesterone releases the lining of the womb, however, I don't know why some women bleed and some women do not - sorry.

I bled for about 4 weeks and now it has stopped.  it was similar the first mirena I had several years ago.  My friend, on the other hand, bled mostly on and off (very light) for about 9 months).

I wonder if it is a combination of the balance of hormone levels (oestrogen and progesterone) plus the thickness of the lining of the womb?  My thoughts but not scientific fact.

I am sure someone will be along soon to give you the proper reason.   ;)
