Coming off HRT
« on: August 18, 2019, 04:08:27 PM »

I had a total hysterectomy last year and I have been taken HRT estrodial gel
One pump a day . My question is when I come off HRT will my symptoms be as bad as I'm thinking I don't want to take it for years . Does the HRT just mask the process and once you stop your back to square one
Thank you

Hia!

It's my understanding that once you stop you are further down the line to where you started peri or post.
Time didn't stand still regarding your journey/cycle through the stages of peri or meno post meno.

I think why you thought that the symptoms may all come back is bcz they can and do for some bcz everyone's meno journey is different in the severity of symptoms and duration of it. It can last for a year, or up to 12 years or even more for some unlucky ladies, and be bearable and symptomless for some and unbearable for others.

So you see it's a "How long is a piece of string" type of question. The only sure-fire way to know is to stop and see how far your body has taken you down the track.

That's what I gathered from my research. I hope that made sense lol! Someone please confirm or correct.

Hello
Yes what you've said made sense  time didn't stand still when I was peri  but when I said to one of my friends  about coming off HRT she told me I'd be back to the beginning of my menopause. I guess it is different for everyone  . I was just going through the change and I had about 3marina coil over 15 year period so that might of helped my menopause. After the hysterectomy I just went from mild to manic ... I didn't take anything for 6 months but was so unhappy . I'm going to continue for about another year and then come off Thanks for your message it's really helped

Michellelouise - don't listen to friends unless they are qualified and experienced gynaecologists who specialise in menopausal problems.

As you have had a hysterectomy, you do not need to come off Oestrogel unless you develop a health issue that results in you needing to stop HRT.  The research shows that hysterectomised women who use oestrogen are less likely to develop breast cancer.  Using Oestrogel will help to prevent osteoporosis, urogenital atrophy, heart disease and even reduce your chance of bowel cancer - so using oestrogen is not just about relieving menopause symptoms. It might be wise to increase your dose to 2 pumps per day to get the full benefit for your bone health.

If I were you, I'd keep using the Oestrogel for as long as possible especially if it is giving you quality of life - one year will not be enough to get the long term benefits.
