A second orthopaedic doctor has confirmed that I have avascular necrosis in my right hip which has resulted in moderate osteoarthritis of the hip.  As I have not taken steroids, had an injury or suffered from alcohol abuse, the only possible reason is the hormonal disruption I experienced 2 years ago. 

He strongly advised me to have a hip replacement- and as I want my life back with no more pain or restrictions on movement, I have agreed to the operation.

I am concerned about possible complications because of the blood supply issue.

Has anyone else had to have this operation and if so, have you recovered ok?

Avascular necrosis is a condition that causes hip pain in young-to-middle-age adults. It’s often referred to as idiopathic,
which means that it doesn’t have any clear cause. However, it’s also linked with
the following:

drinking too much alcohol
•
using steroids
•
sickle cell disease
•
radiotherapy.

Avascular necrosis can occur when the blood supply to the ball of the hip (the femoral head) is lost. This causes the bone tissue to die and the femoral head to
collapse, which results in arthritis.

Interesting. Sounds like the condition can be extremely painful! 

What's your main concern about surgical intervention?

Yes it’s very painful especially as I also have osteoarthritis- this is why I’m taking amitriptylene and naproxen - thankfully they are managing the pain.

I’m concerned about the complications that may arise during and after the operation regarding the blood supply issue.
