Progesterone change
« on: January 16, 2026, 12:30:08 PM »

Hi everyone,
After spotting on various doses of oestrogel and utrogestan my GP has now prescribed Oestrogel and Provera 10mg to stabilise the uterus.
Has anyone else any experience of this?

No personal experience but a great deal of indirect experience.

For many years it was the only agent we had for endometrial protection, and hence has the longest safety record including the infamous WHI study.

Even elderly women with multiple comorbidities suffered no overall harm from long term use, in combination with oral equine derived estrogen.

Whilst no longer first choice for most people due to its metabolic profile, it remains a useful tool in the armoury and usually provides excellent bleed control.

However most women do not require 10mg long term to oppose NHS doses of estradiol. This can be appropriate initially to stem bleeding but  should be reviewed going forward.

10mg may be suitable within sequential regimes but is overkill on a continuous basis unless there are risk factors for endometrial hyperplasia.
