Cant cope with Utrogestan anymore
« on: December 30, 2025, 06:57:36 PM »

Hi,
Ive been taking Utrogestan (vaginally) for about 6 months.
However, the anxiety has been really, really bad. It has not got any better at all.
Also I'm concerned about the actual insertion. I insert Utrogestan vaginally with my finger but it seems to seep out - am I doing this right? Or should I use some sort of device?
In a nutshell I really cant cope with any extra anxiety - I suffer with it too much as it is.
I really would prefere to use a more natural form of Progesterone - but this is not registered on the NHS.

As far as I know, Utrogestan is the most natural form you get its bio identical. It really does not have to be inserted in too far at all just past the entrance works for me. Yes it does seep out overnight, but that usually only happens after a few hours and sometimes a bit of the outer casing will come out in the loo first morning wee. I also find Utro can make me feel a bit "wired up" but  I have read that increasing the dose to 200mg sometimes helps that. I cannot answer as I dont want to take so much but most women are on that dosage plus more although personally I would love to find a 50mg Prog dosage that one can use Vaginally but just not possible. Why dont you try using it cyclically so you then only use it for 2 weeks of each month, just bear in mind, this will result in a short withdrawal bleed so if that is going to be a problem, then you will need to use daily.

Just to be clear the dose for cyclical progesterone is generally twice that used continuously.

This does suit some people but others find a lower dose continuous easier to tolerate than seesawing up and down.

Also there are multiple progestogen options other than micronised progesterone available, plus tibolone, on the NHS, and it always amazes me how much of their quality of life some women are willing to sacrifice on the alter of "body identical" when micronised progesterone is making them unwell yet they have never tried anything else.

Anxiety can also be an oestrogen deficiency syndrome (as well as other causes) so it might be worth making sure it's being caused by utro. Are you on sequi or conti? If it's conti perhaps try 2-4 weeks without it to check first. I didn't get on with utro, was better with norethisterone and have no side effects from a mirena so it's worth trying other options.

Thankyou so much for your supportive replies.
It seems so difficult to get the right individual combination of hrt - Estrogen/Progesterone.
I think with Utrogestan, although bio-identical - there is obviously some ingredient or level of ingredients that cause severe Anxiety.
Sometimes I wish I could just omit hrt forever......as I'm sure other members here feel the same??
I will however try Tibolone? Are there any members who take this?
And, how are your symptoms?

Nobody is forced to use hormone therapy, it's a personal choice and plenty of women either choose to go without it, cannot access it or don't even know about it, and many of them don't suffer any serious adverse consequences.

But what is a shame is where someone wants the benefits that ovarian hormones or their analogues confer, but feels like they have to give up treatment because one particular formulation hasn't worked out.

It's like trying on a single pair of shoes and if those don't fit spending the rest of your life barefoot!

Tibolone is a good all rounder, particularly suitable for progestogen intolerant women and definitely on my shortlist for when the time comes (I still require menstrual suppression so am on a combined pill).

If you search the forum you'll find posts from those with personal experience using tibolone.
