After effects of alcohol during perimenopuase (fast heartbeat)
« on: December 14, 2025, 06:25:32 PM »

Hi, im new to this forum and hopefully i can get some answers or help from here!!

I'm going through perimenopause and iv had the marena coil fitted and on estrogel and testosterone everything seems to be working ok but not when I drink alcohol, im not a bog drinker  anyway but I noticed at the beginning of the year after drinking alcohol I would suffer through the night with a racing heart and palpations I thought by having the marena & replacement estrogen gel that it would all sort itself out but its still there, does anyone else have this and has anyone found any remedies to ease or stop it! I drink lots of water and have electrolytes but it doesn't seem to do anything I just wonder what it is thats causing it all of a sudden.

If I've had too much to drink I would get the racing heartbeats but that's usually through dehydration. I usually drink lots of water that stops this happening.

Must be hormonal making you more sensitive to the alcohol then.

I don’t get palpitations but on occasion I get facial flushes within a couple of sip of alcohol. It’s like having a random hot flush just affecting my cheeks  ;D

I used to drink at least one glass of wine on most nights and would have frequent palpitations where it feels like the heart missing a beat. These would come in clusters and I decided earlier this year to cut out wine for a  few weeks to see if it would help. It was like a light switch, within days they had all but disappeared and my pulse rate was a lot slower. I also started using magnesium which also helps for palpitations but yes, I am a firm believer that alcohol can contribute to arrythmias.

Alcohol is a depressive.  Many find that they have to give it up as they age due to reactions.  Would U miss it much?

It seems to start around perimenopause when hormone imbalance also becomes more obvious. I assume it’s to do with our ageing livers taking longer to process the acetaldehyde (and our hormones). Some men get it too as they age.

Sadly, all the things that used to help prior to peri, such as rehydrating, milk thistle etc, no longer helps.

I also get it when I get oestrogen spikes, so you feel hungover even when you haven’t touched a drop!

I've always had fast heartbeats during the night after drinking alcohol but I could tolerate it in my twenties, but in my thirties and forties I couldn't cope with it anymore, I would have to sober up for a couple of hours before going to bed. I cant drink at all now as it would give me silent reflux. I did google it once and it said somewhere that alcohol directly affects the heartbeat. It didn't cause me any major issues but it made me anxious not being able to relax or do anything about it when my heart was beating too fast. I used to drink loads of water but that didn't make any difference either.

Yes its definitely a mix of age, perimenopause, estrogen and hormones.... someone mentioned ashwaghanda and magnesium so iv been taking them and being very hopeful, im hoping I can have at least 1 or 2 drinks for Christmas without feeling the horrible after effects 😔  thankyou all......every bit of feedback is greatly appreciated 👏 💐

I had a life altering brain injury when I was 34 and (although it is the absolute least of my concerns) have been completely unable to tolerate alcohol since, having previously enjoyed an occasional glass of wine.

I have heard of other people becoming alcohol intolerant coinciding with menopause.
