Concern about neuropathic pain
« on: December 13, 2025, 03:21:47 PM »

I had a mirena coil inserted in March 2024 while having an hysteroscopy under anaesthetic to stop the continual light bleeding since starting on HRT in September 2023.  I was unsure about doing this but I was grieving after the passing of my dad in 2022 and my mother in 2023.  I think I was also suffering from brain fog and a lack of support from friends and family. The gynaecologist was also evasive in answering my questions and the anaesthetist didn’t call me before the operation.  So I felt in the dark with no other option.  Several ladies on the menopause support group advised having the hysteroscopy done under anaesthetic.  My gut instinct was right because I suffered from severe pains in my whole genital area for 3 months along with palpitations during the night.  All the GP did was to send me for an ultrasound scan which showed the coil was fitted correctly even though she said that it was placed low down when she examined me.  I believe the coil damaged the femoral nerve which probably is linked to the pains in my right groin that I’ve experienced since March this year.  As my pains became more severe, along with palpitations during the night, I paid for an MRI scan which showed osteoarthritis of both hips.  I asked the GP to prescribe amitriptylene as I read that this interrupts pain messages.  I was started on 10mg but this needed to be increased to 50 mg which has helped settle the pain so I can get on with my life.  However I began to experience pains in my back, neck, knees and have had to call 111 a few times until finally an out of hours doctor prescribed naproxen which has been effective.  My GP has done lots of blood tests and the results are now normal so he sees no need to refer me to a neurologist, rheumatologist or pain management specialist.  He said to wait and see what the orthopaedic doctor says in January. I’m surprised about this as he acknowledged that amitriptylene isn’t normally prescribed for osteoarthritis.  Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Groin pain is caused by problems in the hip.

'hip' pain is caused by problems in the spine

OA is natural wear and tear as we age and as we evolved to walk upright, the pelvis and hips bear the brunt of that pressure from the top of head downwards.

What is your shoe wear like?  Sometimes altering what we wear on our feet can help rebalance the body as it prevents compensation due to aches and pains.

Do U already have an appt to see an orthopaedic consultant?

Yes I’m seeing one of my choice in January.  I just hope he acknowledges my concern about nerve pain which I believe is the main cause of my osteoarthritis.  I’m also having a bone density scan next week. I’m also speaking to a senior GP consultant next week about my MRI scan result.
