Hello, new here and post menopause
« on: December 01, 2025, 02:26:03 PM »

Hi ladies,

I’ve just joined here so hoping I can put my mind at rest with what’s going on. Started hrt 3 months ago , 2 pumps of Estrogel and 100 mg utrogestan for days 1 to 25. Was 11 months without a period at that point. Has all been working well and my symptoms have improved. Have had no bleeding at all, and reached the 12 months of no period and being post meno. This month (month3) I experienced very light brown bleeding on day 21 of the utrogestan. It lasted a couple of days then stopped. Again, no bleed on the utrogestan free days (I was told to have a 3 day break each month then start again).

I visited my Dr today, and I’ve been told to stop taking the hrt and I’ve now been referred for an urgent ultrasound.?

I had half expected her to say wait and see what happens, but this has really stressed me out. I’m not sure if she is being completely over cautious, or this is something to worry about? She has previously said to me she is not a menopause expert…. x

Don’t stress, discharge and even bleeding are fairly common, sadly a lot of Drs don’t know the first thing about menopause. Can’t advise on the hrt but I’m sure someone will be along to help. Do you suffer from vaginal atrophy?

Welcome - oh we've got C.mas hats  ;D

I don't know that it's necessary to stop HRT prior to a scan, hopefully some1 will be along with advice.  I believe that it's usual for HRT to cause break through bleeds, what U describe is 'old' blood.  Probably due to not enough hormones to push the 'show' through and nowt to worry about.  At the end of each period I would miss 2 days then have a 'show' of brown discharge - normal 4 me.

Which symptom would U like to ease with HRT?

Browse round.  Make notes ;-)

Thanks for the replies ladies . My main symptoms before starting hrt were dryness and hot flushes - both have improved in the last 3 months. I’m worried about going for the ultrasound in case I have a thickened womb lining and that then means more tests.

I had an ultrasound last year and my lining was normal. It’s now booked in for after Christmas, so will not be taking the hrt, and will probably have the horrible symptoms come back.

Does anyone know if I should expect to properly bleed once I’m off the hrt? Wondering what to expect, and if that normally happens if you’re post menopausal? I’m 51, last period was October last year x

Do U mean vaginal dryness?  there should be no reason to stop that prior to investigations, maybe ring the Dept and ask.

I'm not medical but I can't see the sense in stopping HRT whilst you wait for a scan, what difference would it make in the short term whilst you wait for the appointment.
If you mean you are suffering from dryness due to GSM symptoms, ask the GP for topical oestrogen whilst you wait for your appointment, that won't be an issue as topical treatment is perfectly ok to use.

I wouldn't worry, your GP is being overly cautious. The NHS defines meno as a year without a bleed for safety, in reality there are women who go longer than a year and then bleed again, once or several times. I agree there's no need to stop oestrogen while you wait. Very few scan show anything sinister.
