Someone told me I should be getting a urine sample checked after finishing antibiotics. They're just not on the ball with it but I'm going to ask. I really don't get many UTIs now. This is the first for some time, so I'll see how I go on.

When I had my kidney infection it took two lots to sort it.  First multi spectrum and then a bacteria specific.  It's not unusual to need a the two sorts.

Sorry to jump on this post.
I’ve got a UTI at the moment which I think started last week. Saw a medical assistant at the surgery yesterday who did a dip test which showed Leukocytes, Nitrates and trace of blood. Sample has been sent off for analysis.
She wanted to only give me 3 days of Nitrofurantoin and I had a real battle to get 5 days supply. I told her that people over the age of 65 should not be given these short course antibiotics.  That’s the reason why pharmacies can’t prescribe antibiotics for UTI’s over this age group.
It’s 9 months since my last UTI so maybe the Blissel or Hyalofemme that I use is working on my VA. I’m feeling like chewed string today and so down.
If it wasn’t so cold I’d go and sit by my husband’s grave and have a good weep.

Spush and Jules

Well my sample went off this am.
I honestly think that I have some sort of anxiety around UTI and bladder.

Everytime I have a long journey or have to see my Max Fax consultant I start to feel the urge and I am like a yoyo up and down. It can be overpowering, yet after incident it disappears.

Sprush I am glad that you got 5 days ABs.  Might I suggest you get some Waterfall D manose and take it morning and night for about 5 days after finishes ABs. I really should have then gone to nightly but didn't!!!  and felt things coming back yesterday so yesterday have started again, and have in the past kept taking it just at night as last drink - small wine glass flat teaspoon .
in water. My surgery say over 65years age group has to be sent off to lab. Do stay strong and what with a UTI and darn Nitrofurtion(horrid things) plus the time of year you are bound to be a bit low.

Take care

Today have had it and I think it helps.  But if UTI is full blown it might not clear it.

Old Frumpy bless you. Thanks for your response.

Fingers crossed that you don’t need the dreaded antibiotics.

I took Nitrofurantoin in February and thought I had got off lightly with any side effects.  I’ve  got stomach cramps like blazes after 2 doses. ( Any tips anyone on coping with that.) Just forced down a ready meal and taken an Optibac For Those on Antibiotics tablet.
These were recommended to me so hoping they replenish the good bacteria.
I might look at getting some Waterfall D Mannose.

I've asked the doctor and he said the antibiotics could have skewed results but that the main thing is the symptoms have gone and they would only re-test if blood had been found which it hasn't or if symptoms return. I feel ok. I've just held my full bladder for a good hour whilst out walking and did ok. I didn't have side effects from the nitrofurantoin. It is a horrible thing when you start worrying a UTI is starting. I remember being curled up on the floor with that awful continual urge to pee because my GP wouldn't prescribe until the lab results were back and my son rang her and told her to help. Within two tablets the urge had stopped. Thankfully they give me an emergency pack now which Ive not used for about 4 years. I'm going to be more vigilant about drinking water and though I'm always careful I will be even more careful about hygiene when applying my estrogen cream. Drink plenty ladies.

Jules how are you today? Do hope you are ok.
I’ve just taken Nitrofurantoin tablet number 4, only 6 more to go. The stomach cramps side effect yesterday were awful. Just hoping today is a better day.
By the way I managed to drink 4 pints of water through the day yesterday.
I’m also taking the Optibac for people on antibiotics.

The sun is shining here in Hampshire, hope it is with you too.

I'm okay thanks. I've not had anymore symptoms. When I was in hospital in America the doctor told me they give buscopan for bladder infection as it stops the spasm. I'd been using it as I thought it must be IBS when the doctor said it wasn't a UTI. I hope you're soon feeling better.

Jules, glad you are ok.

That’s interesting about Buscopan. Worth knowing.
I’ve got pain in my urinary tract again today. Just hope that soon stops.
I’ll try and drink more water again, although I think CKLD said not to overdo that?

sprush...yes I had tummy pain, always had capsule with food.   Pain was caused by ABs and I used to firmly rub tummy from botton tummy at top legs in round motion across and  to ribs and walk as doing it.  I am sure the belches could be heard next door.  It was like burping a baby, so that and peppermint tea got it up(so to speak)  I also sucked Rennie Deflatine which relieves the discomfort of trapped wind and had in house, what is in it well simeticone which is Buscopan.  Hope this helps Deflatine is in supermarkets etc and in yellow box.  Only thing to say I believe it would be best to suck and 90 mins  or more after ABs.

Jules glad you are feeling better

Both take care and stay warm

Re drinking, you can drink too much water and flush out essential minerals etc but you'd have to drink a lot because we're all supposed to be drinking a few pints of water a day, which is easy in warm weather but in minus temperatures not so easy!

How is your pain now? Did you get any results?
I'm having a feeling of a UTI brewing but I think it might just be VA. The recent experience seems to have triggered my anxiety about Iris again and I'm aware of every sensation that might be a symptom of one. Things were pretty much under control until then.
