Recurrent urine Infection
« on: November 15, 2025, 01:47:27 PM »

I'm in the midst of my 3rd urine infection in 6 months. I'm 63 and had my first urine infection in my life this year so this is unusual for me.

I'm on Kliovance systemic HRT and Ovestin cream. I've been using Ovestin 3 nights a week after the loading period. This is for the last 18 months. I know I have to pursue possible other causes but I suspect this is oestrogen related and Ovestin isn't enough. I got my latest prescription for Nitrofurantonin 7 days through the 111 system.

I was wondering once any other cause has been eliminated if estring would provide better protection against uti's.

I've a history of UTIs. I think you may need the cream daily and also vaginal estrogen. The cause could be your tissues thinning with reduced estrogen. My infections were nearly always triggered by sex so I was eventually given a prophylactic antibiotic to take after sex which did the trick.

Apple just finished 5 day course Nitrofurantonin on Tuesday, seemed to do the trick - however I took the added precaution of using Waterfall D manose powder morning and night after and today am dropping once to take nightly for few days.  It is my second UTI since June.

While I don't use your HRT, I inceased my Vagifem every 2 days and instead twice weekly am keeping that up next week I think..
I am 7 years older but wonder if maybe a more localised pessary might help (like Jules suggests also).

As for the UTI, I always kick myself because for me I feel it is a lack drinking water and when travelling not stopping enough times for comfort breaks.  Lastly buy some bio yoghurt like plain Yeo Yalley as help keep good bacteria in gut which AB's can strip away and thrush can come along.

I don't drink enough water either. I've just had a UTI, out of the blue, not related to sex,  haven't had one for a long time so it's concerning. It reminded me to drink more water. I've increased the vagifem to nightly just this last week too just temporarily to bolster defences. I don't know why some women are more prone than others. They are so troublesome

These symptoms may be caused by vaginal atrophy - it is important that a urine sample is sent to a Lab to test for 'growth' .  In the meantime get a prescription for appropriate VA treatment  which can be used nightly for ever if necessary.

Recognising recurring symptoms if 1 has dropped treatment to less than nightly is important to avoid un-necessary AB treatment.  Urine infection-type symptoms mimic VA really really well!
