Vaginal Swelling
« on: November 27, 2025, 09:52:14 AM »

I have been on estriol cream externally and vagirux internally for about 3 months.  Last night I popped a pessary in with my finger after failing with the applicator, and I noticed I’m very swollen inside, the vaginal walls feel very lumpy and thick. Is this caused by the estrogen and is it normal?  I’m a bit frightened!

The vagina walls should feel like
ridges (called rugae) not smooth and usually moist. Estrogen will usually plumped the walls up and when they are hydrated reverse the atrophy.  If you're not sore inside and the discharge is normal, no irritation etc then it sounds normal.
However if the swelling feels like a  bulge on the wall that could be a slight bladder prolapse, but continued estrogen treatment will also treat this. Do you remember how it felt before treatment.

I'm waiting for a scan for something similar. I felt a bulge though. Can't feel it anymore and the doctor couldn't and said it was likely a vaginal wall prolapse. Mine feels quite lumpy and I presume it's the tissues plumping up. I've increased my vagifem and working on my pelvic floor. Do you have any discomfort? If you haven't and as Deidre says no discharge I wouldn't worry. I did panic though so I understand your worry.

GP told me one time that rugae can change with menopause she told me to go home & look it up.
I’ve just looked it up now & it says can disappear or flatten.

Apparently rugae are there to give the vagina elasticity & stretch like an accordion. 🤣
