Emotions all over the place
« on: October 24, 2025, 07:36:36 PM »

Hello
This is my first time posting in this forum or any forum for that matter
I feel like I’m going mad - my moods are all over the place, one minute I’m happy, next I’m sad, then I want to cry over nothing.
I’m getting pissed off by slightest little things that didn’t bother me before.
I’m forgetting things and misplacing things too.
I’m currently on HRT patches and progesterone too.
Should I go back to my GP and have my medication reviewed, do I need anti depressants?
I haven’t discussed with my husband as I feel he will just dismiss me.

It's like being a teenager again isn't it? You don't say how long you've been on HRT for, it does take a while to settle.  If you've been on it a while you might need to try a different dose.

Same advice from me. You need to give it 3 months to get the full benefit but if you've been on it longer than that I would ask for an increase. Imo you should replace your missing oestrogen rather than use ads.

Thank you - I have been on it for over a year now - I have had the dose increased once due to hot flashes not going but they have now stopped - physically most of my symptoms are under control but mentally I’m all over the place

What many of us and medics forget, is that hormones rise and fall naturally: when we get to peri they can go higher/lower = all these symptoms.  R your symptoms cylical?

Keeping a mood/food/symptom diary may be of use to you, variations to discuss with your GP.

R U able to tell us which HRT regime U R using?  Some find the progesterone part very difficult.

That's sad that U are unable to discuss with your husband  :-\ but at this stage of our lives we should not imagine what others may think or how they might react. He may B wondering why your moods etc. are as they are ............. ask him how much he is aware of menopause as an opening?

When R U next due for a med review?  There are dedicated menopause clinics both in the NHS and private sector: there are long waiting lists to paying for advice mayB, your GP will have a clearer idea of what is required and should be able to prescribe what is suggested.

Are you still in peri or post menopause? Some of us in peri (like me) and I think also some early post menopausal women that still experience many fluctuations, need their cycle suppressed to feel more balanced.

I’m sharing my journey, because it might be helpful if you recognize things (I’m not sure if your issues are the same, so it might not he helpful at all. Just ignore it then ;-)).
Are you taking your progesterone continuously or sequentially? I’ve tried both for prolonged periods, but I wasn’t able to get to a point where I could tolerate progesterone (utrogestan), it gave me both mood and physical issues. I did notice when doing estrogen only during the sequential parts, estrogen works really well for me. I’ve tried mirena (I had one before that I tolerated, although I had some issues), but it gave me mood issues and very sharp pains on the 4 month mark and I had it removed. I tried a bunch of other things too, but besides not tolerating most progestins, my cycle clouded a lot, where I didn’t knowwhat was a side effect and what was just my own progesterone (that I also don’t tolerate). Last progestin I’ve tried was drospirenone and after the first very difficult 6 weeks, my own cycle was clearly suppressed and I started feeling way more level mood wise. Drospirenone wasn’t a good fit physically, because the diuretic effect was too strong (also the estrogen was too low in what I was taking) and I had an eczema flare up (most people don’t have this side effect). I now switched to oestrogel as my estrogen and dienogest as my progestin (dienogest is a 4th generation progestin like drospirenone, so I’m hoping I’ll tolerate it mood wise too). I’m only 4 days in (on dienogest, I started with the oestrogel almost 2 weeks ago), so too early to say, but so far I’m only having physical side effect (heavy fatigue, headache, some cramping and slight nausea after taking it), these are pretty typical for me when trialing anything new, so I’m expecting those to subside in a couple of weeks. I’m not noticing any effect on my mood yet, so my hopes are up that this will be the right fit. Transdermal estrogen works well for me (oral not so much), I do know that for sure.

So I’m taking Estraderm MX50 patches twice a week and Progersterine 100mg for half my cycle - I’m still having periods so does that mean I’m peri stage? They can go a few months regular then periods 10 days apart and other times no period for up to 3 months.
Not sure when next med review is, to be honest the doctors haven’t reached out to me once since starting, for a medication review.
I know I need to talk to my husband, im just scared he will dismiss my concerns and tell me to get on with it.
