anxiety medication
« on: October 16, 2025, 10:38:04 AM »

Hi all, Not been on here for a long time. Hope everyone is doing ok.

I am looking for advice about anti anxiety medication. I have always experienced anxiety but have never been on medication (to anxious to take it!) I have been on a fairly even keel for many years but recently there have been some problems at home and my anxiety has ramped up. I am anxious about everything and can't sleep for things going round and round and my headaches which were controlled by HRT have come back big time.

I reluctantly feel it may be the time to try some medication as I just can't seem to cope very well.

Thanks

I was feeling like you a couple of years  ago, after years of various stages of anxiety I thought I'd try medication and the doctor gave me a link to the NHS website with all the different choices of antidepressants and said pick one. I read all the different side effects, dosages etc and choose Citalopram. I also know a few relatives and friends on this one, it seems popular. Got it home read the leaflet and was too scared and anxious too take it!
I then signed up for Talking Therapy sessions, there was a few weeks waiting list but it was worth the wait and I'd definately recommend it. You could try the meds while waiting for the therapy.

What's to lose?  Without my anti-depressant medication I wouldn't be here, my GP in the past has prescribed Propranolol which helped and I have an emergency drug to grab when anxiety floors me.

Would U worry as much about diabetic or heart medication?

Bach's flower mouth spray might help as can relaxation therapy, swimming, gentle exercise.

Thanks both. I looked at the NHS site and it seems useful. I have also signed up for the talking therapy but have had CBT before and although the strategies are useful it doesn't seem to do much to alleviate my anxiety. I'm willing to try anything though.

Next thing is to try and get a drs appointment.

If it was controlled by hrt but now it isn't perhaps try increasing your oestrogen dose. I've had to do so 3 times now following the return of anxiety when my own production has reduced.

There’s nothing weak about needing extra help when anxiety ramps up. Medication doesn’t have to be forever  sometimes it’s just a tool to get you back to feeling like yourself. If your sleep and daily life are being affected, talking to your doctor is a good step. You might even start on a low dose to see how your body reacts. You don’t have to keep struggling on your own.
