Does it get better??
« on: September 21, 2025, 09:56:30 AM »

I started HRT at the beginning of the month and while I was just using oestrogel I was happy. Now I'm one week into my 14 days of 200mg progesterone (they're 200mg capsules) and I'm thoroughly miserable. My mood has tanked, I'm irritable all the time. And I'm constipated. I never get constipated. I'm taking fybogel but to be honest my diet is full of fibre naturally anyway, and I still can't go.

Has anyone been where I am and have things got better or did you need to change your HRT? I can't face another week of feeling this crap, it's impacting everything in my life (possibly dramatic, but I've got a history of depression and anxiety which doesn't help).

Morning.  Many find the progesterone part of a regime difficult.  There are several ways of delivering this hormone so U don't need to suffer.

How were you during your menstruating years?  My moods would dip in the week prior to a bleed and. I would sob the night B4, yep, a period would be there the next morning  >:(

Nowt is dramatic here!  Fibyogel - I passed my gut and emptied the packets into the compost ;-).  Keeping hydrated may help with slow transit which in. my case, is really uncomfortable at times  :-\

And yes, once U get a regime that helps, it does get better.

If you're not already using it vaginally I would do so. It doesn't eliminate every side effect (I  was still groggy)  but it should stop the digestive problems. The normal prescription is for 12 days (days 15-26).

Additionally micronised progesterone is not the only option for endometrial protection.

You could consider the IUS or an oral progestin.

Alternatively tibolone is often overlooked and can be a godsend to those unable to tolerate progestogens at all. (You may have to say your periods have stopped to get this).

I'm sorry you're having a hard time with the progesterone. It's common unfortunately. If you can stick it out a bit longer, it may well improve. But if it doesn't you still have options, so please don't worry that this is your only chance to try HRT.

I started HRT toward the end of last year, and I also had a similar experience in the beginning. I was really tearful, but this did pass after the end of the second month - I hope it will pass for you too!

I also get constipated on 200mg progesterone. This is unusual for me as I have IBS usually causing the opposite problem!

You might do better spreading the progesterone out a bit more, if your doctor will agree to prescribe 100mg capsules instead.
