Further testing breast clinic
« on: September 18, 2025, 05:43:12 AM »

I am nearly 66 years old and I went for my routine mammogram, I have just received a letter in the post from the breast screening clinic saying they want me to go for further testing , I am concerned and I am naturally worried, at the initial mammogram the procedure really hurt I have very small breasts and trying to get them into the clamps was difficult.

Any ladies out there who have been through this who can offer advice please .

Follow up to this post

So I have been this morning to my appointment regarding further testing and after having a ultrasound I was told there is 2 large cysts in my left breast which was drained and I had another mammogram straight after to check my left breast further

Then the results were checked by 2 consultants and everything looked fine nothing sinister .
I did ask if these cysts can come back and was told yes and my next mammogram would be in 3 years times .
I was so relieved the worry waiting for this appointment was tremendous.

The service I received was brilliant and so efficient and the mammogram at the hospital was so gentle the lady who undertook it was a professional and told me if the procedure hurts then it’s not done properly.

So all in all it’s been a great day and I can now get on with my life .

First of all don't panic.  Most women who are recalled do not have a serious issue.

Secondly, check the letter for a phone number.  If you are really stressed call up and ask the reason for the recall.  I did this and it helped a great deal.

Thirdly, if you have been having your regular 3 yearly checks, and have small breasts, it's likely that anything that does need treatment will be a very early problem.  This was the case with me.

Good luck and try not to worry.

Just to echo what Aprilflower said, don’t read too much into it, I have been recalled twice now, cysts are VERY common and they simply have to investigate if anything different shows up. I too have small breasts and can sympathise,as I know how painful it is between those blasted clamps.
My letter stated that out of all the recalls, something like 95% (or higher, can’t quite remember) are perfectly ok
Do please let us know how you get on

I've been recalled twice. I was extremely scared on both occasions. First time they did a vacuum biopsy because of some type of tissue they saw. All was fine. The second time it was simply how I'd been squashed in the machine. Try not to worry, they like to double check things which is reassuring

Awww fantastic news, really happy for you. I have cysts all the time, not much need to get them drained really unless they become problematic. The NHS site has a good piece on knowing the difference between a cyst and anything nasty, worth taking a look .  :)

Tnx for the update. It's a worrying time but your results are reassuring and if you've been given 3 years then other than checking regularly but not obsessively U can look forwards.

That's good news. I also had breast cysts from my 30s to my 50s. I was on a 3 monthly review for 10 years and most times had a cyst drained. I actually found it reassuring that I was being checked by an expert regularly.
