Provera - would it stop natural periods?
« on: Today at 10:03:44 AM »

As the title says, in short, would it?

Would it be strong enough to stop a natural cycle? (I don't want  Mirena).
Is it safe for long term use?

Thank you for any replies

Yes, it can be used in doses ranging from 5mg to 15mg daily long term for menstrual suppression.

It is quite an old fashioned treatment now but perfectly safe and reasonable to try.

I would start with 5mg and give that a chance for 2-3 months so you don't end up on a higher dose than you need.

Ironically this is the progestin with the most safety data in older ladies from the good old WHI.  ;)

The one caveat that I would add for anyone younger/not on estrogen reading this and thinking provera sounds like a good idea, is that yes it will put your ovaries into hibernation but this means no/very low endogenous estradiol.

I know this isn't you Clovie, but occasionally a younger woman turns up having been on long term provera with no estrogen which is essentially iatrogenic menopause.

Thank you, once again, Bombshell. You're amazing.

I'm going to suggest I try this for say, 6 months, instead of scan (as I cannot get a scan on NHS at a date to suit my cycle so I'm not going to be scanned unless just after my period, not going down the investigations route on the results of a scan not at this time!)

Was looking at BMS flowchart for unscheduled bleeding - this does not apply to me!
I am having periods so of COURSE according to them, I am having 'unscheduled' (unexpected) bleeding - but it is quite the opposite and very much expected!

Thanks again x
