Confused
« on: September 11, 2025, 12:21:27 PM »

I started hrt 6 months ago. Oestrogel plus progesterone half of the month. First few months I felt it was making a difference, better mood, breast tenderness went, less sweats. The last two months I have been plagued by what I thought was repeated thrush and a uti, but urine test and vaginal swab ruled those both out. I am in so much discomfort, the only way of describing it is that I am aware of my vagina all of the time, whether that be a stinging, burning, itching, pain, discharge. It's constant. Haven't been intimate with partner for a month now as I am so uncomfortable and we thought I had thrush again. I've had all these symptoms for over two months now and am utterly miserable. I could cry. I'm only 46 and wasn't expecting all this. I'm assuming that these symptoms might be perimenopause related given the other tests have come back clear. I've also been having really bad bloating, menstrual like cramps and spotting. Can anyone help or share their thoughts or similar experiences? I am literally at my wits end. Help. I am considering coming off hrt ti see if it all goes away.

Hello,

This sounds like it is VA (Vaginal atrophy). You probably need vaginal oestrogen. I use Vagifem and Estriol cream which you can get from the GP. I also use HRT as well. The HRT is often not enough to help the VA and local oestrogen is needed. There's a lot of information on the forum about it so have a look. It's very common and treatable so don't panic!

There's also a good Newson podcast about it:

sorry, I told you not to panic!

I should add, I absolutely panicked and thought I would never have sex again!
I just wanted to reassure you that it will get better with the right treatment!
