Newbie in Need of Help Please!
« on: August 26, 2025, 02:25:34 PM »

Hi all,
First time posting and am hoping you can help.
My periods stopped 3 years ago at the age of 46. For the last 8 years I have been experiencing hair loss and recently it has ramped up alongside a burning scalp sensation.
Had my hormones tested last week to rule them out and these were the results.
Serum progesterone:
0.6 nmol/L No range given

Serum oestradiol level:
< 55 pmol/L No range given

Serum testosterone:
1.3 nmol/L
Reference range: 0.5 to 2.5

Serum FSH level:
52.5 I.U./l No range given

I have never been offered HRT but am wondering if I now need it?
Thank you

Hi,

I don't have any insight into those figures but I have read that these blood tests can be a bit misleading as the amount of hormones circulating in your blood isn't good indication  of what your body is actually using. HRT is best prescribed based on symptoms and hair loss can be a symptom of menopause but also other things such as anaemia and thyroid issues. Have you been to your GP about this? I would think blood tests to  rule those things is out woukd be a good place to start.

Hello, I sympathise about the hair loss, it's an awful thing when we prize our hair, understandably, all tied to our femininity etc...

All I can tell you is from my own experience, when I started HRT my hair loss definitely reduced.
It didn't return to as it was before but it is definitely better in that the loss is less. :)
I never had thick hair anyway so I didn't want to lose any more!

I have no knowledge regarding the levels but as Fianna says I've always understood that a blood test is just a 'snap shot' in time and hormones can fluctuate quite wildly from one day/week to next, so I'm not sure how useful the blood tests actually are.
