Loud breathing while sleeping
« on: August 07, 2025, 08:32:30 AM »

Not sure if anyone can advise on this.

Over the last few months my hubby has said that I'm "breathing too loud" while I'm sleeping. Says it got better initially after I started hrt (was on evorel conti) but lately it's got worse. My hrt has now changed to Evorel 50 and Gepretix. It's starting to cause issues between as he says I'm keeping him awake. I don't know what to try but can't let this keep happening.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Hi Saz76, I have a similar problem in that my partner tells me that I snore or breathe deeply and this has only started fairly recently (I'm 66 now).  I believe it is to do with getting older as your muscles get weaker and this includes the throat muscles which relax when you are sleeping.
You could try sleeping on your side and see if this reduces it or failing that your husband could wear ear plugs.
My partner used to snore and that used to keep me awake, but I just gave him a gentle push and he would roll on his side and stop, but I started wearing an earplug just on one side and slept on the other so effectively blocked sound out.

My OH snores like a walrus and it's definitely got worse with age. I don't think there's a way to stop it but sleeping on your side should reduce it. Buy him some earplugs. The wax ones from Boots and mold to eat so good at blocking sound but uncomfortable if you sleep on your side. ACS do custom moulded ones which have great reviews but are expensive. And if anyone knows how to stop him wriggling in the night please tell me (I have considered a pillow over the face...  :()

I would get checked for sleep apnoea.

My mum has it. Nobody will share a building with her let alone a room.

It increases with age across the board but is more common in untreated or suboptimally treated postmenopausal women.

Obesity and alcohol also contribute but it can occur without either of these.

I agree with bombsh3II.  Sleep apnoea needs investigations. When my husband lost weight his symptoms disappeared. I would wake in the night because he had stopped breathing  :o after a gentle poke he would roll over .........

It may also be connected to adenoids if these have grown.  Do get it checked, we shouldn't blame everything on menopause.  Then let us know?
